Is drawing on the iPad a good option?

Drawing on the iPad is a great option.
It's changed many of my drawing habits - I used to always be hunched over my PC drawing, but now I often draw at coffee shops or libraries.

Also, Procreate is really an excellent drawing app.

I can't even say...while I have an iPad and I have Procreate and CSP I barely use it. I feel like my tablet is too small that it feels like my drawing space is cramped; I'm used to being able to spread out on my larger work area at home...also I'm trying to find a nib that I'm comfortable working with- the original iPad nib is too slick against the screen; I bought a paperlike surface sheet that doesnt feel too much like sandpaper & a new nib but I'm still not used to it.

Lastly, I don't care for Procreate as an art app and I'm trying to work out adjusting the tilt in CSP. I've done at least ONE piece using my iPad- everything else has been practice scribbles...

It's sad coz I originally bought it with the goal to do more [mobile] art on it coz back then I had a non screened tablet and I was dragging it(and my laptop) to my day job to do art when I had finished my most of my day job work- but I havent used it in that capacity coz I'm having issues adjusting to it overall to be comfortable working from it more; now that I have a screened display tablet at home I'm definitely NOT dragging my laptop to work.

But don't mind me...I'm just an old dude who is really finicky.

I do applaud folks who create great works from their iPad tablets though.

I know many people who use it. Or cellpones with their fingers.
I dont use portable tablets like samsung, ms or apple for my art, the screen is too small.
Besides my manga (comic) I do in-person art gallery digital pieces, so they are HUGE and detailed.
I prefer my Wacom large. its 14.5 or 15 in drawing space. I place it on my lap. No carpel tunnel issues, hand cramps or cinked neck or back.

I don´t get it to work for me, I tried different screen protector and pen nibs,
it never feels right. I started digital art on a Wacom Companion 2 which
is a mobile screen too and there are worlds between drawing on the
IPad when I compare it to Wacom Companion. I have some illustratior
friends who draw on the IPad all the time and some who, like me,
can´t draw on it

My only problem would be it being small and I like resting my wrist on the surface. Lots of professional artist, specially webcomic artist, use Ipads. Apple has the second best pen for tablets (Cintiq is the industry standard, but far more expensive.) and I have heard mostly good about Procreate. I bought a samsung tablet as a portable tablet when away from my workstation but rarely use it other than to read books on. Wouldn't recommend it as an only option.

I tried on my iPad Air but didn’t like the small working space. Instead I draw on my laptop, a Dell Inspiron 16 7630+ 2-in-1. Its 16” OLED screen with 3840x2400 resolution is just about perfect, and, being a 2-in-1 the screen folds backward to make it a very large tablet. It came with a Dell-branded-but-made-by-Wacom Bluetooth stylus with something like 6900 levels of pressure sensitivity, and it works great. Unfortunately Dell does not make this model anymore, and to my knowledge nobody makes a 2-in-1 with a screen of those specs anymore. When this laptop dies I’ll probably get a normal laptop and a 4K drawing monitor

With an Apple Pencil, yes. I've never used any other tablets, but I'm very happy with the touch sensitivity and feeling drawing with an Apple Pencil on my iPad Pro.

If you can afford the pad and the pencil, I think it's a great choice.

Procreate is my only drawing program so while I haven’t much to compare it with, I would highly recommend it. It’s very quick to get used to and there is a lot of features that are pretty useful for comic making.

Man. I’ve been really wanting a tablet for drawing. Maybe I’ll ask one for Christmas.

I got my iPad(9.5 inch, 6th gen) during a Black Friday sale for $250 back in 2018; I originally wanted the Surface so I could load CSP on there for free...Procreate is a one time payment for the app(I paid $10 and the updates are free), but CSP on iPad is a monthly subscription(I just have the Pro version for $5 a month).

@ThunderChicken I originally started out on a 17" Dell- after 3 yrs it blue screened; I was able to recover it, but it never gained its regular form...I eventually got myself a Huion 22" display tablet for my birthday in 2021 and it kinda clashed with the Dell laptop(everything would freeze up or just crash and reboot). I got tired of it and bought a 17" Lenovo(I hate HP and will not touch that brand) in 2022...my Huion tablet DIED earlier this year so I got an XP Pen 22" display; so far the XP Pen tablet is working better with my laptop than the Huion...there's a tiny degree of parallax that really bothered me when I first started out, but I'm used to it now and work around it.

I want to get a bigger mobile tablet, but the 12" iPad is like $1200...XP Pen has a mobile tablet- the Magic Tablet for $500(it's Android based); Wacom has the Movink(their mobile tablet) for about the same price.

I had the Xpen 22 too and it was the first time when I thought that the screen was big enough to
work on. I wish I had bought the Xpen Magic Tablet instead of the IPad

I could always go BIGGER as far as display tablets go, but that's a lotta money...besides I have an HDMI splitter, that relays the image to a 32" curved monitor I bought back in 2019- so I can see what I'm arting on a LARGER scale; the only part that sucks is the color resolution varies between the monitor and the XP Pen screen.

I'm most likely gonna try to get the XP Pen Magic Tablet for my birthday next year(in about 5 months)...that should give me enough time to thoroughly research it and the Wacom Movink.

Ah, right! If you're planning to use an iPad for drawing, I'd suggest the ipad Air or ipad Pro models.

I don't know, if Ipad is good or not.

I have a great XPPen 15.6 Pro at my working desk but wanted a portable drawing tab too, so I stood before the decision as you and took a little research, since I didn't want to spend too much money on sth that maybe doesn't fit my needs.

So I decided to buy the XPPen magic drawing Pad.

I don't know if I should like, or hate it XD The working with it is smooth, the display has per se a paperlike feeling (for real!) but it surely is much smaller than my big drawing pad at my desk. But it struggles with big resolution data which I choose, since I want to print someday my comic. If its really just web based and just 300 dpi instead of 600 it should be fine. You can also lean your hand on the display. It's still enough space to draw properly. Don't know, if the Ipad is bigger or smaller. If it is smaller I totally wouldnt recommend, when you enjoy big working spaces.
