I have been a little curious with how comics and novels deal with the media in general. Is it ok to just straight up mention something like other shows, movies, games, comics, social media platforms, etc?
I mentioned social media platforms in one of my novels since it fit the setting. I don't think it should be a problem either if it's just mentioned, especially if it's in a neutral or good light. There might be a problem with showing a brand in a bad light (at least I've heard there were cases like that) but otherwise, I don't think anyone would care.
This deeply, deeply depends on where you live, where you publish, genre, etc. Usually references mentioned casually by word shouldn't be a big deal. The issues normally start when brand symbols come in. Even grand landmarks can have weird copyrights attached to them. One of my favourite examples of this in action is this poor Americana comic artist's plight.
I had this scene in my first chapter, the three characters up there are all scythe-wielders from other media. I think it was okay because I put black blocks over their eyes XD
I really really discourage against it though, not because of any potential copyright things, but because literally every comment in my comment section for this episode is OMFG IS THAT RUBY FROM RWBY
Maybe do it in subtle ways... like changing the names and looks of way you're parodying. Although don't overdo it!
relevant: about product placement and fair use
I normally make up brands but if I'm referring to something specific I'll do parody logos.
Sounds fair to me. That'll make things entirely interesting!
Sounds cool to me! I was kinda thinking if I should just use their terms; social media, or internet, or online, etc
It does help ground your setting in the real world if your making reference to something in the real world.
Kinda like Marvel
