Maybe I’m just weird, but I finished both of my books before I even started publishing them here. Wild Nights, Hot and Crazy Days is around 180,000 words. After I finished it I started publishing it on Tapas, but I think I did it too fast, especially at first. I was posting 2-3 updates a day because I really only had to format what was already written to fit Tapas guidelines (such as their 15,000 character limit). Eventually I slowed to two a week because I started adding a drawing to each update instead of to each chapter, and doing those drawings took time. Even still I blitzed the whole thing onto Tapas too fast and didn’t give it time to build a bunch of followers before it was finished. It’s strange though, because even though it is finished and only updating sporadically with specials and short stories it’s getting one or two new subscribers per week.
My second story, Finding Daecon’s Way, is about 160,000 words, and I’ve learned a few lessons with that one. First, I do one update a week, Saturday morning at 12:01AM. Every episode gets a new drawing. Occasionally I will add bonus content such as character bios on Wednesdays. At the current one update per week it should take over a year to get all episodes published. I also left the ending open, meaning that where I finished doesn’t necessarily have to be the end. I can add more to it and keep it going if I want to. I have over a year to decide. And finally, I’ve built myself a nice buffer. I’ve got new episodes uploaded right up to the end of July, with them scheduled to release automatically each Saturday. That gives me breathing room for doing other things, such as breaking my foot last Saturday.
