Vertical isn't better necessarily. Not at all. But it IS easier to read on mobile and a lot of webcomics are read mobile these days. It's also generally easier to design in vertical than page format. You don't have to worry about the full page as a design of its own which is a whole extra level of design when it comes to page layout. With vertical all you have to do is focus on the flow. You can do some neat and creative things with it as well don't get me wrong. But when you look at a page you see it all as one. The flow is more complex and easier to mess up and you have to make it interesting while also considering the ease of reading the page.

With vertical you can do something like this.

Thanks, that was an interesting read. I'll have to talk to our artist about experimenting with different formats. I guess I'm just hesitant about switching up formats when the one we currently have is working well for us on Instagram and Twitter already.

No probs! And honestly, I think it's great if it's aleady working well for you. Don't fix what isn't broken, after all. Just, it never hurts to try a little bit of experiementing here and there. And hey -- it's doesn't even have to be done with your current project. If you're trying to bring on more series, you can definitely experiement with those.

That's true, I'll have to ask our artist which style would be easier for her to make. I also worry that our comic won't get put in any of the trending sections (or whatever it's called on here) without a vertical format.

Honestly, it's less likely just because of the ease of the vertical read. It's kind of a hit I'm taking in doing my comic in page format. But I plan to have a separate upload after each chapter I finish to post a vertical version of the comic as well to bring in that crowd. But the episodes will be much more distant in upload speed

Thanks. There is a part 2 and later a part 3 also

I prefer to work on my comic in page format. I tried to chop up my pages and format them vertical, but the res quality kept getting worse, so I dumped the plan and decided to stick with page format. I dont have an issue reading vertical comics, but I really do hate when there are big ass gutters between panels(and I mean gutters that are big enough you could basically stick another panel in that gutter)...

Then that empty space is doing it's job. It's SUPPOSE to slow readers down. The "webtoon" format is the only one I know of where the spacing is used to control time. Still, not a lot of people know they can just speed it up by using the space bar or PAGE DOWN keys.

Thanks, I like that idea! It would feel better to switch up the style for a completely different project rather than to do it midway with our current one.

I personally feel more comfortable with the webtoon format compared to the more traditional webcomic/printed comic format.
I like the verticality of it, its comfortable to read from my smartphone.
Yes, some artist do leave plenty of white space in the gutter, but there are other creators that experiment more with it.
Honestly there are plenty of things that could be improved from the format, and it would be nice if creators did like the UI-UX designers that they check how the content would look on a smartphone/desktop before publishing to make sure that things are legible, but that might take too much time to do, and more knowledge in readability.

Let me know how that works out for you! I considered doing the same thing but realistically I worry it could end up being too time consuming for me.

Yeah the spacing between panels does seem a bit tricky to get right. And I didn't even consider how the resolution would get lower if you start splitting up your panels individually.

Just another proof that smartphones are an aberration that shouldn't exist, honestly.

One more thing, use those in tandem with a scroll wheel on the mouse makes for an even better reading experence.
