Unfortunately, that's not really true anymore, at least on the internet-- people are very parasocial, and they not only desire access to the creators of their favorite media, they expect it. Even when it comes to comics...like, wasn't the creator of Gachiakuta harrassed off Twitter just a month or two ago?? ^^;;;
Maybe this is something that only applies to Western comics....because you hear the names of Japanese mangaka idolized all the time. I don't even read/watch Bleach, and yet Tite Kubo's name has been seared into my brain...same with Gege Akutami, Tatsuki Fujimoto, Masashi Kishimoto.
You could argue that they don't get 'idolized' until their manga become anime...but I've noticed they have a 'staying power' beyond their flagship series-- even when the animations end, people are still talking about them and their next projects (or heck, their previous projects), giving them personal attention that Western creators don't get.
The only popular Western cartoonist I can think of that gets treated the same way is, technically, Vivziepop. =/ But if we're talking about people currently still making comics...Nate Stevenson, maybe?? But I barely hear his name when people talk about Nimona, let alone his other work. It's just not the same fan culture.
