ig im mainly talking on experience in that when i read, say, valiant comics, i feel like im reading something in the shadow of the big two in terms of lore, even if they do new things with the genre, and it feels like when those superhero universes are so big id rather see people subverting tropes within those universes. like part of the appeal of the runaways or kamala khan are that theyre within the universe theyre subverting.
its definitely true that independent superhero stories can be very rich and exciting and new, and you gotta bear in mind that i was giving reasons people might steer clear of superhero webcomics, rather than Reasons They Suck.
noo-ooo youre right, they dont necessary come for new shit, but they often do. people often get into print comics first, and all the tropes therein. so a lot of people - not all, but a lot, its a trend in the group, yknow? - want to find something new. thats what i mean abt marvel & dc having the genre cornered; they have it flooded. they bring out so much, that a lot of readers can get tired of the genre entirely. even if you are doing something different and subversive with the genre, youre still doing a genre a lot of people are bored of. again, im explaining why people wouldnt read superhero webcomics, trying to get behind their thought process.
i think you 100% missed my point. i never said this aversion was logical, or justified, just that it is. like if u go to a site thats 99% manga, you post your american style webcomic and ask 'whys nobody reading?' someone would say 'oh most people here dont like that style.' it may suck balls but its the case.
like, im all for people making superhero webcomics, and some are genuinely subversive and entertaining and fill a gap the print industry never would. but there are reasons people dont want to read them, which is what i outlined.
