like i love superheros a Fuck Tonne and i came to western comics through the MCU, but idk abt superhero webcomics. i tend to avoid them.
overall, im unimpressed by most superhero comics coming out these days not made by marvel or DC; might be a little bit of elitism in there, ill be the first to admit, but also, marvel and DC have the market so cornered, and they have the history; the massive, rich, original worlds. i think id prefer to read a new and innovative superhero story from within that world, than get into another, newer, thinner superhero world that may have lifted a little or a lot from the big two.
maybe part of it is because within the big two, thats more or less all you can write. you can write a slice of life, but its with superheros. you can write a fantasy, but its superheros. you can write a bouncy cartoony comedy, but you bet your ass its superheros. and because of that, it feels like when given the freedom to do whatever you want, why the hell are you doing superheros? when im given the freedom to read whatever i want when scanning through indie- and webcomics, why would i read another superhero story?
i think theres also a large degree of the webcomic crowd thats... artsier? superhero comics are the action movies of comics; while they can be extremely clever, and technically brilliant, and beautiful, its still bang pang wow lady in her knickers just killed a man. a lot of people into webcomics are into comics, and wanna see experiments, and variety. Maybe not even major, maybe just a story idea that sounds fresh. the superhero genre comes with a lot of cultural and aesthetic baggage thatll keep it from feeling fresh unless you really disguise it as something else.
id say also there may be more women in the webcomic crowd. now, women read superhero comics, i am a woman and read superhero comics. im so crazy into marvel dude. buuuuut theres often something very male about those stories, and the print comicbook fandom, with its superheros, is often crazy misogynistic (as a community, im not saying each individual is a misogynist ofc.) so i think a lot of progressive, lgbt, otherwise marginalised, and female webcomic fans take it as a bit of a red flag.
tl:dr
- marvel and DC got the market cornered and flooded
- people come to webcomics for variety and innovation, and arent looking for more superheros
- superhero comics have a bad reputation that doesnt mesh with this demographic
ALL OF THAT SAID, these are my own opinions and dont take them as gospel truth. and i understand that superhero stories are really exciting and fun and after reading a tonne of superhero stories, of course you want to make one. do it. there are people who will enjoy it, and you will, and you shouldnt bottle up or scrap an idea because its not the hot topic of the times.
edit: shit man i shoulda read the other posts i gave u a damn ESSAY im sorry. also seconding the no good heroes recc, that comic is the shit.
