So I've been thinking about making a biographical strip, that would mostly involve rock bands or other musical artists. My question is if you're doing a biography ( this isn't for school btw) would you need the subjects permission? And if so, would it be too much effort to even bother?

If all individuals who are the features of the biography (be it one person, or a band as you say) are dead, you don't require permission, unless they have living relatives that have issued a ban on biographies. If they're alive, you require something called "life rights", which I'm afraid you're not gonna get for any well known bands because they often have already given their life rights to their recording studios/production companies so that they can make biographies, mostly in the form of movies.

I once read a memoir where some of the names of people were changed due to legal reasons or privacy. And some people will write memoirs but change every ones name, even their own.
