Male VS Female Characters

I did a headcount the other day for another thread and from all the characters that are important to the story 19 are female, 17 male, and 3 non-binary; there was no reason for this, it's just how I felt the characters should be. The main characters are 1 male, 1 female, 1 n/a (currently looks male).

I've got 4 main characters, 3 are female and one is male. I personally don't care for drawing men because they're shaped weird.

I write waaaaaaaay more male characters than female characters - they just seem to come to me easier, and im not even writing male characters 'cause i write mxm, i write mxm because the characters i want to write about are male so what can you do

no one's ever complained about them being too feminine so hopefully they're okay

Mhmmm, if I consider a story that I'm currently editing, it's quite even. The main characters are 2 males and 2 females; in which a pair of brother and sister being one on the spotlight. However, the actual story itself revolves around the 2 male characters, and an important female entity. Also, my villains are 2 females and 1 male. I'll also be adding 2 more female characters and 1 more character. So, yeah. I don't even realize I write like this lol.

My story has more female charas than male but I didn't really plan any of that as I started this comic as a fun little thing, that I never thought to become that big of a project. The main cast is 1 female 1 male so this is pretty even. The guy doesn't have any friends and just his mother. The girl on the other hand has some female friends (and a few male but they aren't in the story atm). The "villains" are pretty much even.

For me, it really depends on the work. I always try to write a strong blend of male vs female characters. Even if I make the main character a male, I do my best to give the female characters plenty of agency throughout the writing and vice versa. I guess it really just depends on what I'm writing at the time, but I usually try to have a healthy mix in there.

I feel you xD I also like to draw female characters more. might be because I'm a girl myself and therefore know those bodies better than the male ones. But I often tend to spend more time on developing on the guys personality (My Maincast is 1f 1m atm).

In a past story I even started with a girl (Who reeealy was a mary su) but then got much more interested in the side-chara guy. So the next story of this series was around him and his struggle. So now I realy like those unperfect characters, who have a burden on themselfes.

At the start of my novel the main cast is slightly weighted more towards males than females (though this balance changes a few times for story reasons ) but the POV character is female and doesn't change. The characters roles hasn't had any bearing on their gender it's just what happened when making them, though I tend to feel more comfortable writing from a female POV, I did it in my mini-series too. Just is what it is I guess

Overall my stories skew more male characters. However, I normally don't actively consider whether my characters should be one or the other, they just are. Like they will pop into my head with a gender (or nonbinary) already.

But I suppose I'm biased because I like drawing masculine forms so more characters end up as guys. I also have many mxm couples.

A breakdown of my stories.

Demon House: MC - female. Demons - 3 female, 4 male, 1 nonbinary. Human friends - 3 female, 4 male
Heavy Horns: MC - male. Love Interest - male. Friends - 3 female, 1 male.
Erie Waters: MC - male. Love Interest - male. Secondary characters - 2 female.
At Ease: MC - male. Love Interest - male
Sarota Springs: MC - male. Secondary characters - 1 female, 3 male.
Secunda: MC - female. Love Interests - 3 male.

My comic is female dominant with 3 female (Tonx, Fife and Cecilia) and 2 male (Cliff and Neil) main characters. I'm more drawn to writing female leads mostly due to the fact that I am a woman myself. I'm not above writing male protagonists though, the main character of my fantasy is male, but eventually he and the female lead to share the same amount of focus.

I'm the opposite, I have more female characters 'cause I'm a girl, but that could also be a result of me not having any male friends, thus making them harder to write/understand.
My current comic has 3 male and 3 female characters. The lead is female and two of the males have antagonist roles and aren't seen much. One thing I do struggle with is writing men interesting without them becoming too feminine.

I'm making a GL story, so a lot more females. I prefer to draw females.

Only two males so far, and one is androgynous that could be either male or female.

how many male VS female characters do you have in your stories

if you mean like if I had any male vs female fights I have a few. One where the mc is fighting against the last member of the group to prove his prove, one where he's fighting his rival character of the story and the last is when he's fighting against of the main villains of the series. if that's what you mean.

I write mostly girls because there aren't enough good women leads in fiction and I write queer characters and there definitely isn't enough queer heroines. I was even worried about making girls believable though. I don't have my head in either space. But as long as you give them decent agency and individual personality I really don't think it matters so much, especially as now people are starting to understand that gender is a spectrum. What I really worry about is representing non-binary people accurately and my own cultures (I'm bi-racial)

Personally for me, out of 20 main characters, 12 are male, and 7 are female (do not ask about the one missing). I have more male characters because as a girl, I personally find guys a bit more interesting I don't really have a good reason for it, but I guess I couldn't come up with more interesting character concepts for girls, but guys come easier to my head. One thing I was worried about was that people would call me out on not writing guys "right" as I've heard that girls tend to get called out for

I don't know when it started for me, but I think I find women more fascinating than men at this point lol. I certainly like to write them more, and they seem more fun in my opinion. Part of that, I think, comes from the fact that it always bothers me when a show or movie I'm watching is a sausage fest and there's like ONE girl to be...the girl lol. In my first project, Frontier-0, the cast is more female oriented. The main character is a woman, as is one of the secondary main ones. The villain is a guy, and I do have a main good guy too, but I keep finding myself gravitating more towards the women. I think it really is a preference for the writer, and maybe some women prefer writing men like you do, and some guys women like I do. There's no wrong answer here lol. I do like writing guys too, to be clear, maybe this is a phase for me for all I know lol.

I never try to create male or female characters or strive for balance. I have the story idea and make so many changes that once I'm somewhat satisfied, it is what it is half the mains are now sides, new people have come in and that human's now a monster.

I love writing as both genders, and whenever I get the chance, I try to switch it up. I am currently writing 2 stories on here. In The Last Goddess, I would say that currently, the cast is overpopulated with male characters, and there's really only 1 consistent female character. It is an entirely plot-based decision and will later balance itself out... kinda. Lol. In Tempest, there are about 7 male characters and 5 female characters, but there's honestly no real reason for it.

I think I have a tendency to make my lead characters female for some reason.
I've heard some circles in the writing community say that male writers can't write female MCs properly, so it's interesting to hear that the opposite is said as well (and a little satisfying to hear it to be wrong)

I haven't tallied up all of my characters yet, as my comic is in the process of being made, but I can say that there are definitely more male characters than female. Out of the main group, I think there are 5 males and 2 females. But that's not counting the villains. I'm hoping to add some female villains in there.
