Mentor Character Appreciation (Or Depreciation?!) Show off your mentor OCS!

@vapidink Oooh lots of mentor characters I see!!! They seem to play an important role in the stories then? Lol I love the comment, "he's a handsome old man" I agree he is very pretty. Both Adamos and Beryl look done with Aster's nonsense, is he a bit of a handful as a student?

Also booo!!! booo!! tomatoes at Antemortem, no in all seriousness he does sound like a really awful mentor. He was just sort of using his student as a pawn in his deranged plans then? D: He could possibly get the award for Worst Mentor in Fiction though. I don't think I even have any mentors that try to kill their students, intentionally anyways.

@abigaillmartin You should go where your interest take you, that's what I do too! It keeps you more dedicated to the project, it can be hard to work on something that you lose interest in. But I don't think that'll be a problem with Houdini centered projects lol. I think it could be really funny too, but also have the potential to be slightly informative with the amount of Houdini facts that are gonna in there

SAME!!! I have like three novels I'm currently writing, one is at 40,000 words, the other almost 20,000, and then ones itty bitty at 7,000 words lol. My focus goes BOING all off the walls like an uncontrollable bouncey ball

That’s why Omega City has been on the self since 2018. I lost interest in the storyline I wrote originally. There were several of them. I didn’t know what I was doing with it. Now I just want to make it into a fun science fiction story. I went for more serious tones and drama but I suppose that got really boring. I was a teenager when I wrote that first draft of it and I guess I wanted to make it edgy 🤣🤣🤣

Speaking of completely different stories, here's a mentor who sort of sucks at teaching but isn't actually a bad person??? So the reverse of Knight Geoffrey, who is good at teaching but a horrible person. But the not so horrible mentor is Sabah!! He's sort of like a goofy teacher, I think he has a hard time being serious so it can be hard to learn from him.

Here is Sabah with his equally goofy student, Nydia (I think Sabah is still more theatrical and she gets annoyed by him often). Although I guess at some point they get more serious about their psychic abilities to move the story along. I have a bit of the comic drawn but I just have the rough draft posted on tumblr lol. Maybe I'll make the pages final and start posting it to tapas? It feels weird not having it in ms paint though.

Lmao, I posted those in my art book and I like to add my little ramblings about the characters as little notes. And yes, he's a handful as an adult, lol. His "husband" has to keep saving him and keeping him out of trouble.

Ethelred is definitely in the running for worst mentor of the year. But he might like that, actually I don't usually have mentors, but these are fantasy stories so mentors for everyone! Then Antemortem is about necromancers and death so it ended up pretty dark, lol.

ETA: Sabah sounds so real though, just an accidentally bad teacher. But like, at least he looks good while failing.

This is my Night At The Museum spoof. It’s not my best work but I really really enjoyed writing it.

This comic was actually a test for the new digital pen I was using. I switched from a map brush pen to a vector pen. I used this silly comic as practice.

I’m a security guard in this one. This one is a little trippy too. 🤣

Me too. I really like Taro and his gang. They remind me of The Goonies a little bit. They’re such cute kids. They’re like high schoolers but in the original draft they were middle schoolers.

I realize maybe I DO have a mentor that tries to kill his student now that I think of it...totally forgot that. But never Sabah, he's just a dream psychic trying to live his life ... with amazing hair He only has time for his hair care routine, sorry, teaching got put on the back burner lol

Axel is definitely a mentor character for Felix. I don’t remember what I’ve said about those two characters here, but Felix is a terrible person and Axel is an excellent role model for him (except when it comes to sanitation) so naturally when they get stuck together, Felix learns a lot from her. Survival skills, magic, and friendship​

It was an Inksgiving prize! I just started it though because I was busy, lol. Most of my comments are about little details I might not mention in the story or about the characters. Aster's a dreamseer and his dreams showed him visions of the future, which was awful, and then they told him to marry this one guy. So he found the one guy and was like, "marry me for six months and I'll make you hella rich, be back in three days for your yes!" and then they got married.

Sabah sounds great, like maybe a teacher I'd love to have even if I didn't learn anything in the end, lol! But like, he does have great hair, so maybe he should be teaching hair care. He'd make a killing! His style is great too.

@ArtGremlin WAIT Felix is a terrible person??!?!?! I'm so shook, he looks so deceivingly adorable and marshmallowy I thought he was a softie for sure. Well let's hope Axel can put him back on the right path. Although, she feels just a liiiitttle bit deranged BUT I totally love that for her honestly and I hope that same energy rubs off on Felix eventually too I do really like Axel's design though, that's a cute fanart of her. It must be the multiple eyes I'm drawn to!??!?

@vapidink Oh that's such a cute idea! An artbook does sound like a huge undertaking though, I hope you get some more time to work on it!! I love having little details like that in my sketchbooks too also, I think they're like funfacts but for your own OCs xD

ALSO Is it Aster that's deranged for asking some random guy to marry him or is it actually the husband that's deranged for saying yes to this deal I love it though, I wonder if there's potential for actual love though? Or is it strictly for business...

Lol yeah if anything Sabah is still really supportive, he does end up being helpful ///shocker/// but maybe he would do really well teaching his hair care secrets... (Thank you btw <3)

I literally have no idea how many revisions I went through with these guys.

The first one was more structured like a high school teen drama story
The second one (I can remember) is where they live in a post apocalyptic society and they are metal scavengers and getting paid with future currency
The third took place in a space station at a spaceship academy.

There were so many revisions. The main character was a character named Knox and he was a cyborg for most of the revisions. Basically a super solider kid who had to hide his cyborg identity.

But then I switched the main character to Taro because he was more likable I guess. Knox is now fully an android. The main dynamic between Taro and Knox is that they are best friends.

I think I remembered in the beta stages that I wrote in high school Taro was friends with an android so I guess it went back full circle.
