Last year, my first year on Tapas, I discovered something called Mermay, where you draw your OC's as merpeople. Is that a thing this year?

Last year I did this one of Daecon as a Merman. I didn't give him a fish tail because in my Shapeshifter world they cannot take the forms of fish (or invertebrates either). Instead I turned his feet into flippers, gave him pearlescent scales, and added translucent fins. This was a milestone drawing for me, as it was done while I was still learning to do different effects, and the pearlescent scales and translucent fins were both my first attempts at such effects (as was the water, including the rippling surface and the coral).

This year I'll probably do one of Daecon and Evander together

I might try drawing my leads Alicia as a mermaid. Interestingly enough she's gonna be doing a water-themed photo shoot in the second book, so maybe I'll base it in that lol

That is a beautiful drawing of Daecon, btw.

I might try to draw my humans and--chickens as mermaids. Would be a hilarious exercise on part of the chickens XD. Let's try it!

Are there rules to this thing? I literally just drew 2 full scenes with a lot of merma-fied chars, just for funsies.

Last year there were rules about the physical dimensions of the drawing (it had to fit within a certain box so it could be featured on a "card" if it was featured at all). This year I haven't seen anything at all about Mermay, so I dunno.

And yeah, I love that pic of Daecon. I'm almost finished with this year's. Just wait'll you see that one... (should be in a few hours, or tomorrow, 13 May, after supper at the latest)

There are no rules to this. Maybe some groups try and make their own little playground for the theme. But overall, I have never seen there be any rules.

And even then, fuck the rules, draw what you want! :triumph:

If ever there was a slogan I'd have printed on a T-shirt, that is it: Fuck the rules, draw what you want!

But last year for the official Tapas Mermay thing it had to be a certain size, and it had to be SFW. I think those were the only rules, though. And the prize was a big fat nothing, so...

Ok, got Daecon and Evander Mermay 2024 done. Or maybe it's MerGAY 2024. Because these two are definitely fixing to find a nice stream, swim up it, and spawn.

I've decided that I really like drawing coral. You can pick any old brush, any old colour, and let fly because coral is just so weird! You couldn't draw something stranger and prettier than real coral. Still, doing that reef was like 30 layers (each reef plant/creature/colour got its own layer)

My mermaid Alicia. She's a very small mermaid lol. Probably half guppy

It definitely doesn’t feel finished to me, but it was a little low on my priority list so I decided I might as well post it now

Mev and Ian <3

I'm doing a MerMay piece, but none of my comic characters as merfolk- kinda creating a character from scratch...
