Minor Milestones, but Milestones Nonetheless

Yo! I'm working on a 50-page one-shot too Wanted to get some practice in before I start a long series.

I haven't posted yet, but I have made 11 pages of buffer for my upcoming comic! I'm nearly done with a chapter, so that's something!

Same same! Back in November I started rebooting this long form fantasy epic I started working on years ago in highschool, but had to stop myself around the turn of the year because I realized: A.) I don't have enough experience for that and B.) It wasn't planned out enough xD So I turned to some one-shots first/instead.

This one's plot is about a group of people who are part of a Treasure Hunter guild whose town's most precious treasure gets stolen and they have to go get it back. But the story itself is more about the main character having modest/weak abilities and trying to come to terms with how he can contribute to the team without necessarily being the strongest/being able to confront every problem head on.

I'm sure some things could still be improved, but I got some solid beta reader feedback on the story board and feel pretty good about it as a "debut project" :] Better yet that it's short enough to probably be finished in a year or less! Maybe. We'll see xD;;

I'll reciprocate the question, what's yours going to be about?

Getting my first couple of subscribers. It made me feel happy to see that people were enjoying my story so far. It's a great feeling when you get recognition for your work. Comments are great, but the readers that stick with you are amazing! So I totally agree with @Peni 100%

Dude. DUDE! I was working on a goddamn fantasy long series too! XD
And stopped for the same reasons! I was basically worlbuilding for these characters of mien that I've had since I was nothing but a wee smite, and well. I loved the first pages, but I needed more planning before continuing. And I posted it twice. Lesson learned. Also, I'm curious, how did those first pages for the longofrm comic look like? Can I see? :o

Ah, mine was born from my love of zombie media. but like, I didn't want to do anything longform for it, or anything like the Walking Dead. So:

Yes! I feel like that's a common "trap" to fall into xD I have several friends who were writing similar stories back around that time and never got too far with them... One actually did, wrote like 20 chapters of this fantasy novel, but planned it out to be wayyyyy too long so even that was barely a dent in the actual plot haha.

This is the first page, but I think all of the navigational links are broken (tumblr confounds me @n@) To see the rest it's probably easier to go to the main page and just scroll to the bottom lol. I initially made my tumblr just for hosting the comic, so the first 7 uploads are the pages in question. Then I started mirroring my other social media stuff there too, so they got buried xD;;

I have a recurring milestone to reach every other day : upload an episode. Even if I don't know what to say, even if it's gonna be a depressing or hard or silly or useless one, still write those 500+ words and get them out there one day out of two.
I work without a buffer, I figured it would be a nice challenge, and I have absolutely no idea where my story is going. I know the end, but not how it gets there.
So I guess another milestone will be figuring it out...
Oh, and getting at least one new sub every 10 days or so! So far it's working and the feeling is so great, to know that what you do actually interests other people!
I also try to engage with other stories I read, and with my own readers.
Next big milestone is finishing the story before next Writer's Camp, and next medium milestone will be getting a buffer before going on vacation!

Oh god, fantasy novels. Did they plan it out to be a trilogy? Because I heard that that too was a common mistake XD

LOL well, the next page cuts to the school cafeteria and she just pulls up the news article on her phone outlining the big giveaway and is all "we're going to this after school!"

Then fast forward to the end of the chapter like 10 pages later where everyone who got something from the giveaway gets warped off to a fantasy world, and it's one of those types of stories xD Where the giveaway was an elaborate trap by the bad guy to kidnap a bunch of people and so on and so forth. Everything beyond Ch 2 where that's revealed is pretty okay-to-subpar though, and if I ever pick the story back up I need to make better motivations for a lot of the characters xD

Bro, you and me both. you know, I've been writing short stories for my own characters from that long ass series and I've found out that a) holy fuck I don't know how to write these assholes and b) I need to write them better XD Ah well.

I too have a fantasy long series. Are we all the same person? Mine was concepted as a 5 part YA series, of which book one is complete (at just over 100k words). I haven't worked on it much this year, being too obsessed with comics, and also because it's apparently not very good. Or it's too weird and disturbing (according to my mother). Either way, about 50 agents have said a very resounding no. So that's kind of disheartening.

Maybe one day I am better at drawing and panelling, I'll adapt it to a comic. You know, if I am also super drunk and working through those 500 pages for an 8th time seems appealing.

I very much admire those of you who have buffers. As soon as I have a page, I immediately want to put it up. I have no impulse control.

I'm not a novelist, so I didn't know that Back when I wrote for ff.net the readers usually liked longer chapters! How curious. But yes, awesome!

I think a lot of people here use the app to just read something during their breaks or look up the Daily Bites on the app. So having smaller episodes makes it really easy for them to keep up without having to look up where they ended.
