I tend to be skeptical of observations like this because who is this vocal segment? The internet? The boards? Are they really majority?
I went and did a little research and Ms. Marvel's 5 first issues, equivalent to this TPB, sold around 30k issues each. The TPB itself sold 7k in the first month, but that's harder to keep track, since people might potentially buy it whenever, so it keeps adding up month after month. That data excludes digital sales and good ol' piracy.
So that means that more than 15k people would want what you say. From experience, the vocal segment are always those 100 people on the internet and they sure seem loud but, honestly, in the end, 30k people ordered those issues.
I must confess that it's my pet peeve when people argue for stuff like this. ''It could be like Spider-Man!''
But that's the thing: It can't. We already have Spider-Man. We actually have two! Three monthly books for Peter right now. Sure, he's not teen anymore, but we have loads of options for teen books in all flavors.
Race is a part of a person, so it should be a part of a character. Being jewish is part of Kitty Pride's character. Being black is part of Luke Cage's. Being muslim is and should be part of Kamala's, I'd argue. It simply changes the way she would see the world. There's no way it wouldn't. You can certainly argue that it's overplayed for your personal taste, but I find insanity to want a different character to have the same adventures as other old heroes.
I'm a mostly (half asian, but yo) white straight man. Most used phrase on this thread for me, to each its own, but that don't mean I don't want to read stories about people completely different from me. As a matter of fact, I want it a lot!
I wanted to make clear though that this in no way is a attack on your taste or anything. You can dislike Khamala, of course. I mentioned that I'm not her biggest fan myself. Awesome characters, not as captivating storylines to me on the book. But man, I'm actually waiting for the next big muslim super to come out, c'mon!
@NickRowler Yo, you made me remember 20th Century Boys and made my day better. Best goddamn manga I've ever read, that shit's my jam!
