I'm in the process of publishing my comic to globalcomix. I'm not leaving tapas though, just trying something new. I want to know if the process in global is similar to tapas. Like I'm still trying to navigate the place and i realized that comics pages get uploaded into a single folder called a "release". Does each release have to be completed with all the pages put into it or can a release have pages added to it the same way we update our pages here.

You can upload it in whatever manner you please. For example, right now Time Gate: Reaper has two "releases" which include the prologue and the first few pages of Chapter 1. When I release more pages of Chapter 1, they'll go up as another release which will notify my readers.

Just think of releases = episodes. They're just new updates.

So that being said, if you want to update in batches vs all at once (if your comic is chapter based), you can absolutely do so, HOWEVER if you add new pages to a release after it's been published, there is no notification system in place at the moment to notify your readers of edits (ex. when you edit an episode on Tapas to include more pages or w/e it'll prompt you if you want to notify your readers of the change).

So just release your pages in whatever batches suit your fancy, whether it's a few pages at a time (I would recommend at least a few pages per update, when it comes to how GC is formatted 1 page per update really only makes sense if you're doing a gag-a-day type comic or something lol but that being said, no one's going to tell you you can't do that, it's free reign on how you want to upload your comic) or as entire chapters, so long as they're new releases and not edits, your readers will be notified  Again, 'releases' is just GC's terminology for what Tapas calls 'episodes' or what other websites call 'updates', etc etc.

Here's an example of what it looks like with Time Gate: Reaper btw:

One comment about it, it takes a while for pages to upload, and i do mean a while. I have a 23 page one shot at the moment. This may well take all night to upload.

Figured it out. Sometimes website don't actually confirm the download until you publish it.

Lifenaut is kind of that way, though that's a different thing.

The other thing: even if I set it to "always free" you still have to pay to read it. This is a little bit misleading. If this remains the case, then I will be removing it and pointing people to my website.

I just intend on uploading to that site in large batches, so each release will be about 10-12 pages. It really is just a system that just allows you to release however you want.

Having said that, Global Comix feels pretty inert.

The forum is also not clear, you're not allowed to post a comic when you first sign up, and yet there are no instructions on how to get access.

I might stick to just updating on my website.

You also can't test read your own comic freely to make sure it reads correctly.

That is strange. I have uploaded all three of my comics there. I did have an issue once when uploading a new page. I let the creator, Nimloth, know and it was resolved.

This sounds like a bug. All my comics are always free and afaik nobody has ever had to pay to read it. I'll let Nimloth know.

That doesn't sound right. What do you mean by not being allowed to post a comic? It's been a while since I signed up so I don't remember the process and it's likely changed since then anyway since that site has gone through a lot of updates.

Basically I tried commenting on a thread welcoming another poet, and it said I had no access.

Is it it issue with twitter login maybe?

Yea reuploaded it and it still says I have to pay 3.45 despite setting it to always free.

This is a potential bug that GC has been notified of  I know none of us as creators (and GC has very accessible communication when it comes to their users and staff) are looking to scam or mislead anyone lol

? This shouldn't be an issue. I was able to upload Time Gate: Reaper within hours of my signing up. That was just a couple days ago.

Ah ok so it's not by design then? I'll chill out a bit then,

( I was going to mention on there I do poetry comics so to speak. )

Hiyas -- folks gave me a ping so I figured I'd hop in quickly and clarify some things.

What files are you trying to upload? Zip? Different JPGs? PDF? If it's a PDF that takes a little longer because we auto-extract the pages in the browser and optimize each image that gets uploaded from the PDF.

If not, then there should be no delay. I just tested with a zip with 170 pages, I was done uploading in about 80 seconds, and the processing after another 60 seconds or so.

I don't know what this means. When files upload, the moment the spinner disappears and the image shows, it's done processing. Upload finished probably about 2-4 seconds before that happens (we auto-generate thumbnails, mobile reader size, and desktop reader size files for all uploads - thus the 2-4 processing delay).

This is simply not the case at all, and I've verified it just now again just in case

Always free to read is a toggle that exists on both releases AND on individual pages that allows the creator to flag those pages or releases as free, regardless of the global or country specific licensing settings  ... and yes -- creator's can opt for using paywall conditionally for specific countries or content languages while keeping things free elsewhere ^.~

You sure can post a comic when you first sign up. Click the big "publish" button in the top nav. If you have not yet set up your creator page (this is separate from your user account for privacy and branding purposes), it will ask you create that first, and then off you go, unlimited uploads and comics.

This is also just not correct. When you're looking at your release, every single page has 3 buttons: "View", "Edit", and a gear icon. "View" takes you into the reading experience where you can go back and forth and look through your upload. Edit opens the "interactive creator tool" where you can set up panel-to-panel reading (and toggle between preview and edit more). Gear option lets you flag pages as free, delete page, or replace the specific image asset used.

That said, you did give me an opportunity to spread some helpful information to folks here, so I suppose I should say thank you

Got it, it had to do with the publishing status. In the uploading it will say schedule and publish, I just needed to do that.

Actually, in the screenshot you posted just now I figured out why you were getting that credits modal incorrectly (it was a display bug, not actually trying to charge credits).

It was a side effect in some work I had done in preparation for letting creators be able to collaborate/co-author comics and was in rare cases (such as yours) not identifying you as the owner properly when a release was unpublished. Fortunately, this was limited to people who created accounts in the last two days (which is why I couldn't find it before).

I've now deployed a fix live to production - you should no longer be getting that problem. Please let me know if you do!

/cheers

Well, yeah. It's a relatively new platform still, among a sea of platforms that have been around for years and typically headline the face of webcomics.

Netflix was founded in like, the 90's but they didn't become relatively well known or mainstream (compared to how big of a household name they are now) until the late 2000's/early 2010's when they switched from Blockbuster-style movie rental deliveries to online streaming.

Just making a point that if we passed on places for being "inert" in their first couple years of starting (which really isn't the best time frame to use for success as most companies, regardless of what they specialize in, don't start to even profit off their business models for the first 2-3 years, it's usually just breaking even and a lot of testing the waters lol), we'd never see places grow /shrug And by not trying out places that may seem 'inert', you (hypothetically speaking) could just be contributing to that very same problem.

Tapas used to be Tapastic, and before that it was ComicPanda and was super teeny tiny. Gotta start somewhere!

Huzzah ^_^

I'm not sure how you gleaned "ignore this site" after I said I posted my own comic there, but alright.

Nah, that wasn't the point of my post but I see how that came across now haha I'm just challenging the concept of what being 'inert' means when you're still a starting out business and platform. Apologies for that lol

And I didn't notice that you uploaded your work, but welcome to GC

Yea now it works like a charm! Will definitely transfer production here.

Forum access issue seems to be access error 401.

It's because the account needs to be verified before you can post. I added a little visual cue for you in the UI

Is there a way to see the content guidelines without creating an account?
edit: found it!

How about if you signed up through Twitter? I haven't gotten my verification email that way.

I can't even report a bug because that access is forbidden, without the ability to verify my email.

I'm not getting my verification email no matter what email I use.

  • I signed up through the twitter button.
  • If verification is required, verification email should be sent at this point. Or sign up through social media doesn't require verification, this should also be specified.
  • If I change the email to gmail, I should immediately get verification email.
