Odd question that I can't find an answer to

I don't really know how to ask this in a manner of which that isn't going to sound weird, but I really want to know this now instead of later.
In a completely black and white, two toned, no grays art-style, how would you go about showing skintones? Like, an african american skintone, or latino or such? Would you just leave it white, or cross-thatch, or color it black with white highlights? Bear in mind I don't know how to do big boy fancy shading for a weekly comic without murdering myself.
I don't know, and I haven't gotten a clear cut answer, and I'd like to know this now instead of later. Sorry if this sounded weird at all.

I would use stippling (small black dots to give the illusion of grey scale) or leave it white if their latino/white/asian and black, blacks lines for africans =P

Comictones are monotone (just black or white dots) so they would typically be used.

If those aren't available then... I suppose it would be up to the artist in that case. I think it depends on the style. I believe I have seen before where simple lines were used as a sort of shading. I don't have any examples to show atm...

Would depend on the art style, but I would just leave the skin without anything to indicate tone. In some people their ethnicity will be evident any way, and in some not, but unless you have a natural way to indicate it, less can be more.

But yeah, I agree with the others that you can use other art methods (hatching, lines, dots) if you're able to make that look appealing. But it could be a great challenge to work on one's ability to draw different facial features instead of focusing on tone as an indicator.

You can also use a black plaster of color and ad some lines to "lighten". is not an odd question, books back then had to make illustrations only using one ink. Maybe looking at examples of Woodcut will help.

I would suggest using screentones. If you're using Clip Studio Paint it has screentones built in or for download, but for another art program you'll be able to find them online I think.

Screentones or manually drawing in dots of various sizes and thicknesses. Paint.NET's free program has some built in.

This was the case with my own comic, too, since I do backgrounds in monochrome purple and all the characters are done in black/white. I started using greyscale for some characters to indicate their skin tones and it looks fine- maybe you could consider adding some grey, see how it looks

Screentones are really great and you can find screentones patterns and even brushes (I think I saw some on deviantart)!
