Okay tropes that annoy you

I find instant love (or even instant attraction) really... boring?? I'd still read the manga/comic that have this trope and there are a lot of comics that do it well but i would like to get to know the characters a little more before they start trying to get together.

But yeah it's done really wrong nine times out of ten. Keep it cool and brief, and please don't turn around to tell your sad backstory/evil plan giving the heroes a clear escape path. If you're REALLY the kind of villain that likes the evil talk more than the evil action (cough), you want them tied up, with minions ready to keep them that way, and eyes on all of them.

I was starting to wonder if I read the original post wrong because yeah.

If we were doing the 'tropes I absolutely hate that makes me quit a series' I would have brought up 'comedic relief sidekicks' and shat all over Olaf and the gargoyles from the Hunchback of Notre Dame (disney) again.

lmao I was just talking about these characters with my SO yesterday. I love The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but the damn gargoyles feel so out of place with the tone of the story. And I was actually getting interested in the new Frozen movie... until Olaf appeared in the trailer.

Completely agree that the gargoyles in the hunchback of notre dame were out of place.

Sometimes comic relief sidekicks become redundant when every character has their own funny moments or the writers make the mistake of giving all the humorous qualities to said character, which either makes the rest of the cast boring or make the sidekick clash too much with the tone.

And don`t get me started when the comic relief fails to be funny......

Of course there can be goofier and sillier characters in a story, but if their only contribution is humor, they become easilly replacceable with using some of the cast`s personality traits for humor. This can work for even the most serious character.

I mean, tropes are tools. I tried not bringing up any of the really bad stuff because I wouldn't actually pick up a series with it at all - Darkness Induced Apathy(grimdark for the sake of grimdark makes you stop caring at all) comes to mind. If you can make Liar Revealed good in a story, it's more commendable than a series that just does the safe stuff but never takes risks, because you picked up a hard-to-subvert cliche and made it work for you and not against you.

As much as I love PreCure, I had that same problem. They'd be screwed if one of them moved out of town. I think the staff did too since the whole "Futari Wa" thing was dropped after season 3. All the characters afterwards can work independently.

• the main character is starting their first day at a new school and all the students are staring and them and whispering/pointing/giggling. LMAO don't really have a problem with this trope but it just irks me because of how unrealistic it is. Actually...
• Bullying being portrayed as only physical - again, not a bad trope and it happens a lot irl, but I really want to see more of the psychological/emotional side of bullying that's more common in girl friend groups. Like, teenage girls can be RUTHLESS.

Sorry Precure sensors triggered. They did not drop it. They insist on bringing it back. They just dropped it for a while. Suite brought it back only for the main two and then Mahou Tsukai brought it back again along with the changing form from Splash Star. And it was dumb even then. They didn't really improve on it at all. Although at least Mahou Tsukai tried to address the fact that they come from literally two different worlds and this might cause trouble.

Which leads nicely to another annoying one; they mysterious transfer kid who seems to have no parents, no records, came from nowhere and made their name up on the spot when realising their alien/magical sounding name won't cut it. Are these schools really that lax on paperwork? Anything other than mindcontrol to get people to stop asking questions ignoring a huge issue. You can't just turn up in a school and claim you're a student.

When the characters in a story are fighting and their clothing never gets dirty or damaged, especially if it's an anime/manga/show where action is the main emphasis coughrwbycough

Also when during fights characters can jump into the air like 30 feet with no explanation, but then later in parts of the story they can't "reach" certain things or are clumsy.

I think RWBY, of all things, can be forgiven for falling into that trope. It started out as such a small project, they probably didn't have the time to make 'damaged' models for every character in every fight. They at least do it when it counts, like when they revealed Ironwood's cyborg body after he got caught in that explosion.

True, and yes when it really matters they do show damage but it's usually story-driven and not an artistic choice. I think now that RT's budget is bigger they could afford to scruff up the characters a bit more in scenes.

I'm a bit tired of the "Two siblings with a tragic past" It shows up a ton in anime and manga, and I'm pretty sure the only series that did it well enough to kept me interested was Fullmetal Alchemist.

I'm mostly talking about the flashback sequences where the siblings are children and running away from a faceless enemy while holding hands. One of them trips and the other cries out "X no! We have to keep going!"

I completely forgot about Mahou Tsukai. That season was so slow and boring I couldn't finish it. I know melody and rhythm in Suite had individual attacks, but they never explained why they had to transform together (at least I don't think they did). I don't think there was a where they weren't together.

Honestly, of all the major magical girl anime, I think Ojamajo Doremi is the most mature and realistic. Which is odd, considering it has probably the youngest target audience. ^^;
