Completely agree that the gargoyles in the hunchback of notre dame were out of place.
Sometimes comic relief sidekicks become redundant when every character has their own funny moments or the writers make the mistake of giving all the humorous qualities to said character, which either makes the rest of the cast boring or make the sidekick clash too much with the tone.
And don`t get me started when the comic relief fails to be funny......
Of course there can be goofier and sillier characters in a story, but if their only contribution is humor, they become easilly replacceable with using some of the cast`s personality traits for humor. This can work for even the most serious character.
