Okay tropes that annoy you

Here’s another thing I hate seeing, primarily in anime and manga: the accidental, or intentional, breast grab from male characters. I hate that so many anime’s and mangas have to show this stuff. I hate, hate, hate, hate it! It’s not funny and it’s not cute. Also, the showing of cleavage is annoying, too. It’s one thing I hate about My Hero Academia. At least, in showing cleavage. I LOVE Momo’s character design, and sure, she uses lipids to create things, but CHANGE HER FREAKIN’ COSTUME! Mini rant over.

Yeah there's so many anime that I would love to recommend to people but because I know there's a breast grab joke scene it's like...well I guess I can never recommend any part of this entire show now, because they'll think I'm a gross person.

i like fanservice tbh. as long as it doesn't break any serious tension or story and fits the tone of the media. the only recent anime i've dropped because of it is Fire Force... like i've read even dude weebs felt pretty icky with how out of place the fanservices are.

Generic OP isekai protagonists. Maybe most isekai protagonists in general.
There are a few exceptions in my opinion, such as the glorious Satou Kazuma!

usually in romcom.

the male lead has a female best friend. she's weak and sickly. and he always has to take care of her. but deep inside, she's a scheming bitch who wants to ruin the main character's life for stealing him from her.... and most of the time she succeeds cuz the male lead reeeaaaallly feels bad for not supporting her. Until he realises he's wrong and loves the mc.

Okay so to balance out the tropes from manga... HEY, AMERICA, you're not getting out scot free! Tropes in American comics that I hate:

• Characters coming back to life like ten issues after they "died forever".
• Female characters getting killed in gratuitously gory, brutal ways to motivate a male character who immediately seems to forget her and get a new girlfriend as soon as there's a new writer.
• New writers just completely ignoring any continuity from before their run and instead having their run heavily reference whatever was happening in that series when they were eleven, which was probably before you were born.
• Cover art that depicts the characters so vastly different from how they look in the interior art in style, appearance and personality, you feel unsure you're picking up the right book.
• Meeting another superhero team and immediately fighting over the most ridiculously contrived misunderstanding.
• Characters who are from other countries who are named after the like... two famous people from that country that the American writers have heard of, who speak broken English peppered with really basic words from their native language (listen.... when you forget a word from the language you're trying to speak and use one from your native tongue... it's usually a HARD WORD, not "hello" or "yes", or if it IS a simple word, it's probably either a "filler word" similar to "um" or "like", or an exclamation or cuss. But those would require research, so instead enjoy "Ah! Konnichiwa- mean hello! Hai, my name is Hikaru Miyazaki, I am from Japan!").
• Female characters whose backstory is that they became a superhero because of either rape or prostitution. (Jessica Jones is like... the only one who ever made this work).
• Total reset on the continuity every 5-10 years but then writers start creeping in references to stuff that happened when they were eleven and justifying how it still applies in this totally new universe and so ruining the "new reader friendly!" continuity almost immediately.

YES. SHE MUST HAVE A BLUE HAIR STREAK! We wouldn't want everyone to think she's just like all the other asian girls who are clearly boring because they all just have black hair because they are CONFORMISTS. She does, however, wear her Japanese style seifuku uniform like all the time for some reason even when not in school! (THANKS, I HATE IT)

Yes, usually they hire a completely different person do to the covers than the interiors--because it's a completely different type of contract to do a cover. So like they pay their cover artists waaaay more per illustration than an interior artist, which is more about how the big 2 don't pay their artists enough more than anything else.

And don’t get me wrong, I LOVE superheroes...but what’s the point of the story when the stakes are super high just to be reset years later? Then this giant web of continuity and other universes is created, and it gets so confusing that it’s exhausting to try and keep up with.

Yeah I never bothered to even get into American comics for this very reason. Which is a shame, because so many of them are really, really beautiful. But making the Marvel and DC universe a continuity I think impaired their fanbase in a really big way. Like I get why they did it, but like...it's been 70 years of lore, and if you are a new person, like myself, and you get any facts wrong, the fanbase is very unforgiving.

And like it also means that Sonic the Hedgehog hung out with Batman once and that's super weird.

Superhero comics are kind of strange. There's a certain egocentricity to the writers of them whereby for better for worse, they ignore a lot continuity from outside their run (it's not always a bad thing, sometimes there's an awful run everyone's happy to pretend never happened when a great writer takes over a series). When you get a good run, often a run that's fairly standalone or only references continuity everyone knows because it's consistent with the movies or cartoons or just generally known via cultural osmosis, they can be REALLY enjoyable! The best ones are often either standalone series, or long stretches with the same, good writer.

Two tropes with glasses... one is when a character has to use a disguise so they just put a pair of glasses, maybe a different hairstyle? And the other one is when a "ugly" character (usually a female, but i've seen it happen with males too) takes off their glasses and suddenly people think they're way more attractive.

People don't look that different just by wearing glasses!! And glasses are cute!!!

This is one huge area I feel like Japan is falling way behind. There's this weird cultural divergence that shuns people like Harvey Weinstein and calls out the importance of the #MeToo movement, but simultaneously accepts sexual harassment as funny in entertainment because... why? Come on.

Seconding (or thirding or fourthing) the clumsy trope. Something in me dies whenever I read a comic with a really cute but charmingly, disastrously clumsy love interest. Stahp. (Unless you are parodying the crap out of it, like this episode of "I don't want this kind of hero."

Here's more:
-Getting drunk and kissing the other character as a way of initiating romance. Negative points when the drunk character has forgotten everything the next morning. Triple negative points if this KEEPS HAPPENING. ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)
-Abusive/controlling behavior is sexy. Nope.
-The ex shows up after the relationship has already been established. oh no, he's going to threaten our love~ Not really horrible I guess but it's just boring and pointless.
-Generally not a fan of harem tropes at all.

...I'm realizing that I read a lot of drama and romance these days and I'm calling myself out.
