One line of Advice for everyone's lives

Say someone has a big project and they think they it will be a bit hit and make them a living wage. Chances are, it won't. Their hopes are dashed, they get discouraged, they stop.

But say they didn't have any great expectations for the project, not expecting it to make a cent. But it does mildly well and earns them a bit of pocket money. Then they can be happy with what they end up with.

Additionally, say a person wants to find a significant other by the time they're 30. They put unnecessary pressure on themselves and feel they failed if it doesn't happen. Had the person have 0 expectations of finding anyone, then they wouldn't be any worse off.

That makes sense for some fields and I understand what you mean, but I don´t think that works for me, I always have very high and detailed expectations and I need this + a goal with high expectations to have the energy to do something. It´s true that I´m disapointed when I don´t fulfill my expectations, I analyze what went wrong, work on it and the next project is better. I always did that and I regret the times when I had no expectations. The satisfaction of high expectations being fulfilled is very satisfying for me more then low/no expectations turn out better than I thought

Setting self-goals is great! Like making a New Year's resolution to exercise more or reduce one's intake of sweets.

However, when dealing with a goal that depends on forces outside of one's control, like audience reaction or your family showing up on time to a party, I believe it's best not to put all of one's faith into it, haha~

I'm generally a fan of "Do no harm, take no shit."

Be kind to people, you have no idea what's going on in their lives and people tend to respond better to it, but don't let them use that as a weakness to exploit. Fight your corner.

Another one is "Have courage, be kind" and, which is kinda the same as the above but feels a bit more proactive like "go, do the thing, you can do it!"

To paraphrase Jake the Dog from Adventure Time:

"Sucking at something is the first step on the road to being good at something."

Or as other people might say it "Fail faster". Basically, you're never going to get good at making stuff without your first attempts being kinda crappy. You may as well just throw yourself into creating stuff, make mistakes and learn from them and build some kind of audience and contacts rather than getting angry that your slow, painstaking early work you agonised over because you wanted to be a success right off the bat only has a small audience or is seen as poor quality. In fact having been "in the biz" over a decade, I've found that in the long run, people whose work was rougher, criticised more and less successful in their early career tend to overtake people who hit early success with surface polish and appealing tropes masking weak art and/or storytelling fundamentals that hold them back later.

One from my native language that I really like is: "een nee heb je, een ja kun je krijgen." It translates to "you have a no, but can get a yes." Aka, don't be affraid to ask because if you don't you'll never get a yes.

Honestly this is my favorite line. Because, how many times do we get caught up in something, emotons, actions, family or life in general. This is just something I want to live by. Which is don't punish yourself for living. You're going to have off days so just breath and let it happen. You're going to get through it and take it one step at a time.

It reminds me that all my worst emotions will come to pass and but also keeps me humble and not to over-inflate myself on an achievement that in the long run will never matter. It has helped me through panic attacks and kept me focused on some of my goals.
