Hello Lovely Authors,

Sigh . . .Such Dilemma w(゚Д゚)w

For my very first novel Eternal Death I put together a rough cover which I think lacked when it comes to defining or hinting about the novel.

New AI Arts guidelines just really trouble for new authors like me ( who can't afford better artists )
Only if those guidelines won't be reviewed , I'd have changed my novel's cover to this .

What do you think ? Which one would have been better ?

Honestly the first cover would more make me click rather than the pic of just AI guy.. doing nothing. Alot of new authors got on by looong before ai so most are fine with it. Most have given advise to each other to use canva as well tips to save cash to get an artist or have made artists friends along the way.

Really this new guidelines dont really affect us that much, cus we got on by without in the past and we will continue to do so. And honestly I hope those new guidelines never change

Thanks, it's true though, cover with mystery and cover with dynamic characters tend to appeal much better . . . d=====( ̄▽ ̄*)b

Yeah, I second Freemints30, the current cover looks way more interesting. The sigil, the fire coming off of the body, and the texture of the skin all look really cool. It gives me questions that would make me want to read the book to know more. The AI one makes me ask "Huh. Could this be made in Artbreeder?" and not much else. It's just someone standing there. The only thing I might prefer from the AI cover is the title font, but the new one is in an interesting enough font. The new cover title being white might also make it stand out better than changing it to gold like the old one, but it's hard to tell without a more direct comparison.

Thanks, actually someone commented on the current cover as giving a "horror romance vibe", so I was bit dumbfounded because my novel is complete opposite.
And bingo  it's from Artbreeder.

I really like the current cover. It catches my eye!

Ah, I can see that. Having a muscular back as the cover image is something that's popular in romance novels, especially over on Wattpad.

I thought I recognized the style , but I'm kind of surprised it can do clothes that detailed.

Just the face is from Artbreeder , everything else was editing work from different sources.

honestly the old/original cover looks way more interesting than random guy #5498463513684. composition is more visually interesting, there's aspects that help build intrigue and honestly people who assume it's romance will quickly be corrected by the genre tags so there's really little concern about attracting a "wrong" audience if they're smart enough to check the tags

if there's any changes to be made i think adding the gold title text from the new one and adding it to the old one is the most i can see doing otherwise it's really kinda fine as is and if you genuinely want something with a character portrait on the cover then it'd be better to just wait and save until you've got enough to commission someone rather than whining about tos changes that the majority of the community agrees on and is fine with

Lol 🤣🤣 #549846313684
Thanks, that's an interesting idea to change the font style. Well, I'm not going whine about it anymore since majority voted for current cover.

it's a random keysmash if anything but you're welcome

i think my issue with covers of that variety, even when it's just photos of regular people, is that they start to look generic or repetitive. it's one of the reasons that some romance stories, for example, don't often grab me but if the characters look visually interesting enough or the pairing is uncommon (like i'm a big monster fan) then maybe it'll have a higher chance

in the same vein fantasy covers that really highlight their characters within the genre and make them genuinely look interesting with some dynamic scene from the story happening or they just look cool then i or any other random reader may be more likely to click

i think that's why as much as i get the push for having characters on the cover page as common advice one things that's often left out is the need for actually interesting composition but folks who don't get that won't really care or pay attention to that. even in graphic design actually appealing/interesting looking visuals will generate more clicks or overall intrigue than something that looks crappy and generic

its one of the reasons why even for the most absurd ai generated stuff nothing beats thoughtful composition which regardless of how much data one of those generators has to work from it's never gonna size up to something human made (and then there's the ethical failings so :eyes:)

as for typography there's probably enough folks here to give input on what may or may not work depending on genre of a work or it's themes. it's a big reason why many folks tend to advise against most default fonts for titles and suggest going for more unique ones similar to what you used in your second cover or otherwise and thankfully there's lots of sites to offer them for free or with affordable licenses

anyway all that's to say thanks for listening in this instance and good luck

That's a great insight. It's true that AI generated stuff can't beat the thoughtful design by hands. Many Senior creators adviced about maintaining and improving covers and banner of our work, because it's the window of our shop.
But my novel is in early stage so I'm more focused about content.

you can absolutely do both. ensuring the quality of your craft as well as making sure your presentation is good are tandem priorities because just as much as you want whats behind the cover to be good you also want to makes sure what you're using as the face of your brand or work or whatever else to be good it's just a matter of micromanaging and taking time to put thought and effort into both

No idea how I can vote, but current cover is way better. Previous cover looks kind of lifeless in a sense? Idk if I am expressing myself correctly. There is also a blue outline in your character of the previous cover that makes it look like it was pasted instead of drawn into the cover of the book.

On the other hand, the current cover looks like all elements were drawn/made that way intentionally. Which makes it look cool and intriguing

Edit: finally figured out how to vote.

"New AI guidelines are trouble", people, you only have been doing AI artworks for what, half a year now? Not 20 years, not 5 years, half a year and suddenly everyone is incapable of doing anything. Especially considering how you can gain Ink on Tapas to pay someone for the cover, you just can ask people on the forum.
Between these two the idea of the first one looks much better, it tells some story. The second one would be better drawn by an artist who knows how to draw expressions, because all I see is a pretty Artbreedeer BJD face.

The two covers are advertising two very different novels. Without reading your novel, I don't know which one is more appropriate. Going by your summary, I'm not convinced either cover is a good fit.

Cover 1: I'm expecting violence, pain, gore, and possibly some rated-R sex. MC is probably some guy who is immortal but keeps on experiencing the pain of death over and over. He buries his sorrows in substance abuse and one-night stands.
Cover 2: I'm expecting a more sterile, geeky sci-fi that probably has some philosophical discussion on whether androids can ever be truly human.
