I absolutely get what you mean! A lot of people don't mention that on here.
I think a prime example of this would be true beauty, where the art is pretty but stiff and inexpressive a lot of the time.
I think people are afraid to push character poses and expressions. A particular problem I see is people sticking to headshot/ torso up artwork, usually because it's easy and you can hide a lack of background ( I know because I used to do this) But in comics you need a variety of shots and you need to establish the scene unless you're purposefully hiding it from the audience.
Shots/ angles and character acting in comics are used for specific narrative purposes, and can really elevate the storytelling because unlike a novel where you describe character action, appearances, interactions etc... a comic relies on you seeing that through the artwork.
None of this is easy, and it's a completely different skill to illustration. In illustration, I can usually get away with 3/4 headshots (although that would be very stale) , but in comics it will not visually convey the story well.
