Hi there, guys!

I'm slowly trying to post on Tapas with my comic Within the Woods. It's a horror comic inspired greatly by my love for H.P. Lovecraftian monsters and Stephen King's "fictional small towns where bad shit goes down" tropes :joy:

I've got a lot of the story written out and scripted (and I even have two parts that can be made into comic pages). But right now, I just wanna post the thumbnail I've made -- just to see how people would react to it.

Tell me what you think! Constructive Criticism is welcomed.

Would you read my story if you saw the thumbnail? Why or why not?
Does anything pull your attention? And if so, which part(s)?

Also, if anyone wants it, I can definitely give the premise of what my story is.

Thank you!

I think it's a great thumbnail! The colors immediately caught my attention, and it's unique enough to stand out. I do think the red of the tears (or blood) could have a little more depth to make it pop. This can be done by using a red color closer to black (without it actually being black) for shading. Another technique is to place the red color on a new layer above the eye. This will give the affect of it spilling over the bottom eyelid.

However, I believe this thumbnail serves its purpose of catching my attention. If you choose to leave it as is, it'll still do its job!

Great work

Thank you for the advice! I've definitely been trying to see how I can change up the blood effect, and that really gives me more ways to do it ^^//

I'm only a writer, so I can't make any comments about art, but if you're going for Lovecraftian/Stephen King styles for your story, than I'd say the thumbnail absolutely nails it in that department! You've got a thumbnail that just oozes a feeling of dread and cosmic horror!

Sure thing! I'm definitely trying to make a nice buffer before I post, but it shouldn't be too long ^^//

I think right now the thumbnail looks great, but you could always try and "amp" it up to try and make it look interesting.

For example, I feel like a bloody eyeball can be a little bit cliche for a horror comic thumbnail, maybe you could put in some elements that make it "your own", "unique".

Also try playing around with composition! I know is hard in a tiny 300 x 300 square, but there are always ways to make your piece look more compelling.

One of my favorite horror comics on Tap is Witch Creek Road (sorry no link! I'm on my phone), because of how much story it can tell with just the thumbnail.
-you can tell it's horror genre
-you know what to expect
-it makes you curious- why tf are there two bloody ladies??

Another tip: I noticed that users on Tap like to go for comics with thumbnails of humans and/or human interaction. A symbol/animal/landscape just isn't as interesting.

Well that took me longer than expected. Hope that helped. Good luck!

Thank you for the feedback!!
I did initially go for this thumbnail because I didn't really want to do a lot of details and have it be "squished" i a way. I've been trying to work on that myself

Oh, and thanks for the comic! Now I have another one to bookmark, hehe~
