“But for real what is it? The superpower you want to have!” He persisted in asking.

“Flying, you boring h**! You changed yours already didn't you?” She giggled.

Chapter 28 - Best friend.
“You forgive everyone for the terrible things they did to you, but you don’t forgive yourself for something you haven’t done. What would you call that if not being stupid?”
“Cause they didn’t kill me.”

“I don’t think his leg is meant to bend that way.”

Zero gave him a fleeting glare. “You saw nothing.

A moment of silence passed between us before she whispered sadly, “I think… Taja was Azlin’s handmaiden.”

“And that makes her traitorous actions ok?” I half-snapped.

Reese swallowed a lump in his throat before he nodded, slowly. “Yeah… yeah, you’re right about Aunt Judy. She definitely has a bionic sense of smell.”

I winked at him before I chuckled. “So, you get it.” I gave him a little shove in the direction of my childhood home. “Go. I’ll call you when I get home.”

Maya laughed and pulled off her necklace. "I'm psychic, mostly. I sometimes see the future, and can pretty easily pick up on emotions. But this necklace is what gives me the rest of my powers. I'm just a focus for what it can do."

"So it's some kind of magical artifact? That's awesome, I thought those were just stories!" Ronnie blushed, regretting his outburst. He needed to get better at controlling his surprise at superhero stuff.

“I can help you get revenge.”

“I want them dead, Kayden, and you can’t kill. I don’t think you are the right person to help me.”

I glanced up at her, and just like that, her amber-like eyes caught me. “Yes, ma’am. Is there something I can get for you.”

She placed her face close to mine for a moment, and every part of me stilled. Everything this woman did made me feel uneasy. “No,” she smirked, walking back to her seat. “Not yet anyway.”

Stunned speechless, I kept a wary eye on Samara. Seraphina removed her hand from her forehead. The second she did, a voice came from Samara’s lips, but it was not hers. “Seraphina, I am surprised to be speaking to you through this vessel.” My previous goddess started. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“Neri,” Seraphina looked down at her like she was about to scold her. “Are you pleased with yourself? Your curse has left the gods anxious for a thousand years. Even now, they scramble to break it.”

Her nostrils flared and the crackling embers in her eyes sparked, “Say that again. Test me-.”

“SHUT UP!”

He stopped manipulating, unclenched his teeth and, awkwardly wielding his parched tongue, asked, “Does it hurt?”
Chris was shaken by a short and slightly hysterical laugh. He removed his hand from his lips, stared into Tau’s eyes and grinned. “Are you joking? I’m on top of bliss right now!”

“Will you forgive me such a liberty?” squeaked the youngster with a smile from ear to ear. Your cheeks must hurt from grinning that much, no?
“As far as I know, slavery in the Holy Empire was abolished more than three hundred years ago.”

“Non, you are not doing that, Petite.” Des announced like it was a done deal. “What if you sneeze again and transform? How are you going to help anyone when you are in this state?”

“I just won’t sneeze!” I wrinkled my nose, feeling another one coming. As if we summoned it by talking about it. “See.” I said through clenched teeth. “Just did it. Pineapple and all that. You know the tricks.” I coughed.

Chapter will soon be released:

“You're the cop I kicked in the face this afternoon.” I exclaimed dumbfounded. How was my luck so bad that I would run into the one cop with a personal vendetta against me; just a few hours before my birthday at that?

“Looks like Karma got you.” He spat, gesturing at my nose. Then his tone deepened as he caressed his gun. “Assaulting an officer is nothing to be proud of. It can get you in real trouble.”

"Aligned? You don't even know what my interest is, and I'm not sure I care what yours is."

“What about you? What do I smell like to you?”

“That’s a double sided question. If I tell you you stink, then that’s rude, but if I say you smell good, you’ll think I’m going to eat you.”

He ripped off a bite of the jerky with his teeth and laughed. “Ning and Yǒng Wěi keep feeding me fruit and you feed me dried meat. I’m waiting to see who’ll feed me vegetables.”

Captain Ānquán laughed. “If you’re thirsty after all that salt, I know of a sweet princess who makes rare teas. Her rabbit has your vegetables.”

“Bye, Petite,” A wicked thought came into my head as I remembered what Penn said to me on her birthday. Quietly, I leaned in and whispered to her, “Use protection.”

Her mouth dropped as her face turned instantly red. Her eyes darted over to Jack, but he didn’t seem to have heard me. Petite’s mouth scrunched up, flustered. “Bye, Des.” She said between gritted teeth just as I walked out.

"There are better ways to make money," Stan told me.

"It's not about money."

"Fame then?"

"Pride. It's about pride," I answered.

Candace floundered for a moment, almost dropping her cards. "Well, uh… I mean, I think he's after something, but not anything obvious," she said with a shrug. "Not bad, not good. Not sex, so you're in the clear there."

Jack rolled his eyes. "Somehow, I doubt that. Just cuz he hasn't tossed a condom at my head, doesn't mean he isn't interested."
