Ok so the whole idea behind my fairytale series is that (almost) every character I draw is morally grey in some way( I know, super original) to play of the general black and whiteness of fairytales. Some are more morally ambiguous, some have questionable motives, and others are downright bad people. I also focus on the "heroes" in this series. I already had this idea before making this specific illustration series, but I wanted to work on my costume design and these were a great set of characters to use.
So for Hansel and Gretel, in their story, they're super poor and abandoned by their family, but in my retelling they're like super rich but pretend to be poor to garner sympathy. Like they beg and steal, and look down on actual poor people while they simultaneously pretend to be poor. They're just generally not nice people.
