Oh man, I'm gonna have to dig deep for this one. I spent most of my early creative years writing half-assed novels, not drawing comics, so most of my terrible OCs exist mostly in prose form only (because I spent those years insisting on only drawing horses and non-humanized dragons).

Surprisingly, my very first OCs - created at age 7 - were surprisingly decent? They were a pair of trolls living in a cave together in some kind of best-buddies/platonic life partners kind of deal, and spent their time tootling around in the woods and raising orphaned wildlife and being nice.

BUT I went diggint through my old dA-archives and found this glorious beauty of a man (demon? thing?):

This is from a decade ago, and my memory of the story is super-hazy, but I'm fairly certain that this guy (I think his name was Kan?) had a story that went something like this: He was a half-demon (his father was some kind of arch-demon) and his human mom had died when he was a kid, and he wore that silly scarf over his face to hide some weird skin-condition that revealed he was a demon - like, the veins were clearly visible beneath his skin, and they were all swirly and black and weird-looking - and he had sharp teeth and everything. You can't see it in this picture, but he has really long hair. It's cut shorter around his face, but he had this really long braid at the nape of his neck.

.... I should probably add that despite the weird skin and the teeth he was, of course, really handsome. Because what's a terrible OC without stunning good looks? XD

He also barely spoke to people, and fell in love with a girl who had the power to change the world (like, literally change it at will; she could stop and restart events whenever she wanted, reliving moments with the knowledge of what happened next), but decided to not tell her because aaargh he was a demon and he couldn't expose her to that kind of danger, blah blah blah. Mostly he sat around brooding in proper half-demonic fashion and feeling sorry for himself, when he wasn't being the world's most kickass fighter. Because of course he was.

I cannot for the life of me remember the exact details of the romantic subplot, though I believe they got together anyway, and then there were some other characters who joined the adventure, and they all beat the crap out of his archdemon dad, and lived kinda-sorta happily ever after, I guess?

This is hysterical! @Kaykedrawsthings, I would totally read a comic that started that way, too. The characters are so weird and you twisting them to make them self-aware is just... yeah, I think it salvages the train wreck, hahah! But they're cool-looking from the get go! u

@BraveHeartTatsumaki, loook at the pokemon!! Haha, I think we all went through that corny phase, yeah? At least your pokemon drawing was nice (Suicune, ooo)!

Mine was actually an anime cat boy, I was like 20 when I made him! Obviously broken off from Loveless, hahah! HE NEVER HAD A NAME, he was just this lonely, lethargic but kind cat boy, around 16-17, with a fox girl as a friend (who also remained nameless). The story basically followed an "alien invasion" by these cat and fox-eared aliens, struggling against some humans who feared them, some humans who wanted to capitalise on them, etc, etc. Very unique, undeniably interesting. (≧▽≦)

Here's a redraw (done for inktober) of a character I made when I was in high school. He's actually a very minor character in that he only showed up for the Halloween specials of the series I was drawing at the time. His name is Vlad and he's half-werewolf half-vampire. Granted he was created for a comedy series and I never took him too seriously... I still like him.

Love this thread smiley Got so many character designs from the past lol.
Here's a picture of a character I named Striker from a series I was working on in High School which I called Dragon Tracker.

@shazzbaa Oh my lord. That emo dragon reminds me of those fucking sparkledogs that people love for some reason?!

What the fuck, KILL IT UNTIL ITS ASHES DISINTEGRATE FROM THE EARTH.

@Kaykedrawsthings I feel like "emo and in love with each other" can sum up a LOT of our younger selves' stories (´ω`)

@BraveHeartTatsumaki Pokemon characters always invoke the most horrific things. Sometimes Pokemon can be used as a force for good, but most of the time it's just fodder for shitting up the Newest section on deviantArt. Strangely though I was super obsessed with pokemon as a kid I didn't go through a phase of creating terrible characters for it. I CONSIDER MYSELF LUCKY.

@AnnaLandin Ahh yes, I'm not sure how horrible you imagined the veins/teeth, but here's to hoping it was just some kind of minor thing because terribad OCs gotta be handsome but be insecure about some tiny scar that doesn't really look that bad.

@phenylketonurics I like how neither of them actually have names. They're just people with animal ears. This looks like something you'd find on the Newest dA pieces for sure.

@joannekwan Half werewolf and half vampire??? Needs more stuff. Have you considered adding half human, half catgirl, half demon, and half fairy? This will help make a good character.

@ulti19 Crono, is that you?

Aww, something about the Mario fancharacter's really hitting home for me. As a kid I would often make girl versions of characters that I liked, mostly in my head, because princesses weren't interesting but genies and Beasts totally were. Also don't even pretend that Piranha training isn't cool.

Man, I don't even wanna throw shade on these old characters; THEY ARE AMAZING AND PURE. xD And I don't wanna laugh at younger creators who are making characters like this either -- LIKE, GO AHEAD AND MAKE YOUR HALF-VAMPIRE HALF-WEREWOLF WITH LOTS OF PIERCINGS AND HAVE A GOOD TIME!! As long as you keep drawing and keep an open mind you will get better and better!!
A thread like this should be inspiring, too -- all of us had these absurd highschool OCs and we loved them for years and we thought they were awesome, and that didn't make us bad artists in the end; they were the first step to becoming awesome!! so no matter where you're coming from, you can get better and better too!

OH NO THIS IS TOO REAL

YEAH DRAGONS WERE BASICALLY MY SPARKLEDOG xD

SEE, I LAUGH, but if Nintendo introduced this character into a game I'M NOT EVEN GOING TO LIE I'D BE 10000000% INTO IT xD

I suddenly have deep regrets for deleting my original deviant art account

William Adair Andrews, I could try and be like "oh well this profile is for a superhero au" but tbh he wasn't any better in his main story. I was probably about 11/12 when I made this guy.
He also started off with a ginger bob and he wore dresses but that apparently got scrapped really quickly. William never aged no matter how old he got and then he was also a zombie at one point and he could make magic teddies that would talk though they always hated him. He was a pirate captain once, and he married a king (who was a friends oc) while also helping the mafia, he was also a landlord at one point, he could travel too and from hell for some reason, he helped start hell's only radio station then didn't work in it. He had a sister who I think was called Mary and his father was a mess but we hated William for some reason.

I've actually brought him back now with hopes of remaking him and sorting out his mess of a story. It may take a while.

omg, I think this is my favorite forum question- I love everybody's comments so far! @Kaykedrawsthings you re-do that monster one a little tongue in cheek and I would totally read it- that ghost girl comment made me lol at work.

And for my characters, I'm not sure where all their drawings went, and I'm not even sure who's the worst offender. I've had alot of bad stories over the years hahaha.

I think the ones that get honorable mention though are from the same world as my comic right now, Kindred Sun (I've been writing in one of the same fantasy worlds for a long time now, and I bounce between different countries every few years.)

I'd been playing around with the idea of a god-system when I was like, 14. And I made these twin gods. Their names were Rhyme and Reason. BUT THERE WAS MORE: they had another mirror side to them, that was DARK AND EVIL AND SHIT. And when they were their alternate selves, their names were CRIME AND TREASON. I figured they were the reason for all the good and evil in the world.

...Needless to say, nothing came of them.

I don't have any character I would call shitty... I'm not sure if that says more about my love for them or my inability to be self-critical. Probably both!

I think the worst characters I've ever made are... the ones I have in my current comic. I have written various versions of the story and most of them are awful, with the protagonist going Mary Sue often and happily. I've tried to rescue them from the Scrappy heap and completely rewrote them.

There's still one character from another old story that I plan to rescue, but I still haven't cracked a way to make her good. This was a story that I wrote very consciously as self-therapy when I was going through the darkest time in my life; it's about a girl (an obvious stand-in for me back then) who meets a boy who popped out of nowhere claiming to be her guardian angel. At first it isn't clear whether the angel is for real or just crazy, but they end up uncovering a giant conspiracy spanning heaven and hell which may or may not just be a metaphor for overcoming adolescence.
The plot actually morphed into something pretty interesting as I tried to do a dramedy that seriously tackled issues like my difficulty relating to others, sexuality, why it's ok to be alone sometimes and why sometimes it really isn't, and a deconstruction of the "magical girlfriend" tropes. However pretty much every character in the pretty big cast I ended up with was more interesting than the protagonist, no doubt because she was a self-insert. I still hope to be able to redo this story someday.

Lmao oh my god... I had some seriously bad OCs.
The worst were the ones I made when I was a kid...They were "gangster cats" who lived in Las Vegas and fought each other with swords and one of them was a NINJA. What the heck... x'DD

I made a lot of bad ones through the years, but since I was more of a writer than a drawer I don't have pictures of them.

But the first one I actually have picture of was from when I was 13...

He was named Yail, and was some sort of steampunk robot. I think he wasn't THAT bad of a character until I decided that he was an assassin badass with a dark past. (face palm)

I really only used him for roleplaying with this one childhood friend of mine, and when I stopped being friends with them all the characters we had created together died off. Which is a good thing. Those characters were awful.

He was in love with one of her characters BUT of course was very tsundere about it. So there's a lot of them fighting because they LOVE each other. (Beats head against desk to try and forget.)

And oh god I just remembered this guy;

Some sort of super angsty character that was a science experiment... Dat rainbow eye. (sobs)
He looks like the human version of the aforementioned sparkle dogs! T___T'''
He was from the same universe as the other one... Seriously glad that universe burned. Ugh.

Thank you, yes, we all went through THAT phase... making OC for Pokemon and RPing-battling with others xD remembering it kinda gives me nostalgia though <3
Your drawings of cats are cute though :3 You do really have a style that you continued with the pass of time to the comic nowadays you're doing, it's great <3

You were lucky, very lucky, my characters weren't that.... monstruosity though, it still kinda kept balance somehow, but I did something worse: Create my own region, and my own Pokemon, I KNOW. over 150 is madness
I saw hell man, I really saw it. But I saw others who were worse, from DA and from the Forums in those times, and I don't know what was worse, DA or the Forums. xD

I still use my shitty old OC's in my comics.

Once upon a time, there was a man who thought: "I'm going to make a comic!"
He then proceeds on designing mary sue characters, story that has too many plot holes than the moon and no
clear ending. Among many other noob and personal fantasies toxic he injects into the comic.

What happen to the guy now? After a colossal kick to the balls he realized his mistake...
and proceeds to creating a shitty comic about magic girls...... Damn Pedo.

TRUE STORY.

Well fuck, I shouldn't have deleted all those old deviations...

Well when I was 10 years old I created my own Teen Titans fan character that was supposed to be Raven's cousin...this character was probably one of the biggest Mary Sues' out there, almost as bad as Ebony from the My Immortal fan fiction of Harry Potter.
My best friend was also a huge fan of the show back then and we'd make stories about the misadventures of our characters. xD I'd post pictures but I lost them over time.

@Savannah Uuuugggh!! I also had a Teen Titans Mary-Sue! She was cat themed -__-

I had a Teen Titans fan character who was Beast Boy's sister... She looked just like him except her skin was blue, not green... <.<;;;;; but I never developed her as a character.
I also had a whole TT rip off team including Peter Powers, who was a Robin expy, Toy Boy, who could turn into toys, and Kid Nightcrawler. Who was just a kid version of the X-Men character.
I never drew these characters so you're just going to have to trust me.

I know! I'm not sure if it's good or bad that my style's kinda remained unchanged in 10+ years! I think I need a revolution! But yo, there's definitely the charm of having that kind of pokemon oc universe of your own. Everyone's always so excited to begin those, I think they've helped kickstart some really awesome characters.

@winglesscomic Dude, yes! When I was posting those images to dA, they got the warmest welcome. I was so excited to share them thanks to that love, hah! The sparkledog thing, though, I think that's the one area I managed to never get into. I have no idea how considering I was a MASSIVE fan of cartoon animal characters.

@meatmaiden These are so great, oh man! Especially their professions, holy cow. Way to give a go at such bizarre territory! It reads so crazy, hah~ And I love the science experiment with the rainbow eye (rainbows are endlessly amusing when you're first making designs, yeah?).

And now that @shazzbaa mentions it, it does feel harsh doggin' on these old characters. They were so much fun to make! I also did a series of illustrations with a character that was a "star saver" but... she was just an overwrought excuse to draw anime-esque scene girl, haha^^ Deviantart was a repository for some of my most inventive years~
