I've had the same feeling working with one of my horror comics Within the Woods (which deals with cult mentality, cosmic horror, sacrifice, and fear-mongering).
When I first started, I wanted to do 12 stories within the series. As time passed, the theme shifted. I initially tried to create an entire cult society with rules, having each story show those rules in action. Towards the end, I realized I didn't need all of these stories. Some just didn't drive the plot forward. So I asked myself:
"Ok, look kiddo -- do you really need 12 stories for this comic? What can you take out?"
In the end, I cut out one story completely, and just combined others. Now, I'm left with 8 stories for this comic. That's 25% I was able to shave off.
I guess, in the end, it's better to ask "what do I really need?"
