I am interested in speaking with any creators on Tapas who use characters from the public domain. Has the Golden Age version of Daredevil appeared your superhero comic? Did Alice or Dorothy give your novel's heroine a tour? Fairy tale characters and mythological figures count as public domain characters also. I run a Facebook page about these characters. The page has over a thousand subscribers, but I confess that it has not been very active lately. I am offering a free plug on my page. Please start a conversation in the comments.

my series GodTown5 has alot of reference to different Gods later on down the line. Greek, Egyptian, Mayan, etc how they intertwined throughout the ages. it's just getting started the first issue just ended.

my comic, There was a War, is a myth retelling! so while the main characters are.... nothing.... like their namesakes theyre still technically the same figures from Irish mythology.

Right now my comic is doing an arc on Julius Caesar, and Marc Antony just showed up so that'll be fun! I've got other gods appearing that aren't ones I made up, but as for characters that entered the public domain from original stories, I can't say I really have any examples. I did, however, include some text from White Fang in chapter 5 and that's a novel in the public domain.

I just did a Red Riding Hood oriented comic on Allstory and before that I talked about the myth of Yggdrasil. I adore myths and legends, so I'll probably be referencing them a lot. They make up a large chunk of my inner world and that's pretty much the entire point of the comic.

These are some great answers, creators. I will be checking each of your series soon.

Hello Sanz, I wanted you to know that I read your first chapter. Although I am blown away by your beautiful artwork, I do not think that the time is right for me to promote your story on my site which is all about public domain characters. I know you mentioned that mythological gods will be appearing down the road, but I expected to see at least one here. Unless I missed something, no public domain characters have appeared yet. It's entirely possible that one of the characters seen is in fact a specific mythology persona, and I just didn't recognize the clues.

Regardeless, I did subscribe and leave some comments. I look forward very much to seeing Chapter 2.

I started reading There Was a War, only through the second post so far. I am finding the events very difficult to follow. Strangely, I sort of like that. It's a fun challenge for me to read, sort of like the writings of Charles Fort. I intend to read some more tomorrow.

haha... difficult to follow... yes.. thats on purpose. i promise. (im glad youre enjoying it though! )

Hi! well if modern fantasy retellings (ie. characters have same names, abilities and commonly associated character traits as their mythological counterparts, but the story is set in present day) of classical myths count, I have Pandora's Scar2.

It's based off the myth of Eros and Psyche and Pandora's Box

Hello creators, I just wanted to update this thread beause I haven't been here for weeks. Real Life has been brutal lately. Those few and generous souls who have subscribed to Alien Fiction may have noticed that it has not been updated either. I won't gripe about all of the problems which have eaten up my free time, but I will just say that I did not lose interest or get lost in video games. I do still intend to follow up my offer of promoting these works. I hope to do so with one or two series before September ends.

Well, I finally got around to posting that plug for There Was a War. I used a screen cap from one of your pages because I thought that use of the artwork was implied.

Hello Strontium, I finally finished writing and sharing my plug for There Was a War. Your comic is next on the list. I'll get back with you after I've read a little from Heroes of Thantopolis.

I briefly used Batman and Superman, like basically as a costume and a mention, but wasn't actually sure if that was okay. If it's not, I'm going to have to alter the comic later.

Hello VermiciousKnid,

First of all, Batman and Superman are both definitely copyrighted characters. Can you use them briefly? Probably -- the entire point of copyright law is to prevent from stealing the creations of others and profiting from them. The entire point of trademark law is to prevent you from creating a similar product and tricking the buyer into thinking that your product and the original product are the same thing.

Limited use of copyrighted materials is allowed as what the courts call "fair use." A brief sample for the purposes of reviewing the work is an example of fair use. Satire and parody are also considered fair use. If your appearance of Batman occurs for the purpose of poking fun at something (like poking fun at Batman), that would be fair use. There have been some cases in which intellectual property owners have challenged fair use in court, but those cases were quite extreme, like copying an entire song and selling an almost identical version but calling it a parody.

Did that clear things up, or did I make it more confusing?

I won't be promoting your work on my page about Public Domain Characters if you aren't using any public domain characters, but what you are doing seems okay based on what you wrote, VermiciousKnid.

Some quick examples...
Copyrighted character: Mickey Mouse
Public Domain character: Santa Claus

Copyrighted character: Batman
Public Domain character: Tarzan

Copyrighted character: Marvel's Daredevil
Public Domain character: the golden age Daredevil

Thanks - that does clear it up. Superman is used in one panel as a parody on the "is it a bird? is it a plane" speech. Batman is a kid's costume and somebody mistakes him for an actual bat.

Actually, that seems like two perfect examples of Fair Use. I might just borrow those pages to use as examples the next tome I discuss the topic.
