Question on Pacing

Looking for some opinions.

More panels per page for faster pacing but slower updates

vs

Less panels per page for on-time updates

Life is making me choose one.

If you don't favor one over the other you may want to ask your readers about their viewing habits.

For example, I like to read my webcomics in alphabetical order. It takes two to three months to make the rounds so post frequency doesn't matter as much. I'm happy as long as the artist has produced something in the intervening time.

Well, a lot of the comics I read on and off of tapas use the latter format, so that's the one I'm comfortable/happy with. There's something about waiting once a week for that one page update that keeps me going.

Edit: I don't really pay attention to comics with sparse updates. I mean, I wont unsub or anything (for the most part), and when they do finally update, I'm elated, but, as a reader it's not an ideal method of receiving content. For me, anyway.

Depends on a lot! Pacing of your comic, your personal priorities for your comic, the actual numbers involved, etc etc.

For instance, as a reader, I'd prefer the option of more panels per page with a one-page-a-week update over the option of fewer panels per page for a 2x a week update. But if more panels per page means only one page every three weeks, I don't think it would be worth it anymore.

And of course, slower updates means slower growth (even if it makes the updates better), but that can be worth it if it's necessary to what you want for your story!

you need both since if you have a dialog scene few panels makes the pacing go up and you feel time passing a lot quicker, but if you have and action/tense scene quicker smaller panels make the pacing slow down, like your looking at a slow mo shot in a movie, the mix of both is what makes most comics interesting and fun, but again different things for different times

I use to have an update schedule of 12 pages three times a week. I have recently changed it to three to four pages every week and have gained more readers that way.

I go with less panels but more updates (life too, makes me make the choice). I think it makes readers keep the comic in the back of their minds if they see it regularly. Plus while a shorter update might disappoint the reader, it can also me nice that a reader doesn't have to take as long to read through it. But this is just how I choose to structure my comic! As others have said, it is completely dependent on the pacing of the comic. Sometimes, I have to post to pages because I do realize that one page will result in too slow of a pacing and risk readers getting "bored."
