Reaction to death scenes of beloved characters

It was a short game, but Valiant Hearts: The Great War ending was so heartwrenching to me...
I REALLY Recommend this Game, it takes place during WW1, play as 4 different people with intertwined path.
That Ending, wow... just... its just not fair. It wasn't his fault, he did it because he HAVE to...

After a fun filled adventure with the hero's braving all odd... I thought this game have a happy end... I was wrong.

The Main character killed the officer because the whole thing is just crazy, they were being pushed to advance onwards with little what they have against machinegun bunkers regardless if you were injured!
And after all the heroic things he did, he was sentenced to death because of a STUPID OFFICER??

As he walks to his death sentence, seeing the image of his family and friends along the way, it hit me...
He hasn't seen his family in at least a year since he was drafted to the army! No goodbye, no farewell, all he has to say is only in the letter he sent to his family, that he has no regret... and how he loves them...

And as I heard the sound of gunshots... I just cried.

I completely forgot the movie existed - despite watching it twice and reacting quite heavily both times.

It's actually quite faithful to the book! At least, it does a wayy better job than many other book to movie adaptations. I can't remember any gripes I had with the movie beyond maybe just missing certain scenes, but it does a wonderful job of bringing The Road 'to life' so to say. I absolutely love how they interpreted the house scene - or really, just everything in the book in general.

When it's a series I'm extremely enjoying I feel "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD- SOMEBODY AVENGE HIM/HER!!". Usually somebody does, but when they can't, or don't it's an emotional strain. I think the first time I felt it was when Dinobot died in Beast Wars. I was still in grade school and I couldn't handle it because I really liked him. He was a traitor with a rigid personality that gave the good-guy side a certain evil spice and it appealed to me,

When it's a series I'm moderately enjoying I feel "...what did you do that for?". More specifically, this happens to me when I'm playing video games. I hate falling in love with the characters that I have to protect or save who die moments after I've protected them or saved them. Specifically, I'm thinking of Akemi from Red Ninja - End of Honor. I actually really liked her, even if she was just a throw away character. Her personality was a ray of sunshine in an otherwise dark storyline.

When it's a series I'm not really enjoying I feel "Oh thank GOD, I can finally stop watching this". Although I'm a fan of Magi - The Labyrinth of Magic, the story is stressful, every arch of the manga tends to feel overbearing and the majority of the supporting cast are unappealing to me. I'm not going to name the three characters I like because of unpopular opinions in the fandom, but I will say these three characters are very orderly, with good morale, and outshine amongst a cast of awkward caricatures. If any of them die in future chapters I will gladly leave the fandom FINALLY!

The only real series death that makes me genuinely sad is when Mrs. Wolowitz died on Big Bang Theory, because her actress actually died IRL. I think about it every time I hear her voice on the reruns. She wasn't just a comedic character, she was a woman everyone could identify having met or having as a mother!

I stare at one spot and try and tell myself that their not really dead, that they're still alive... I basically live in denial.
(Throwback to Death Note... L was my favourite, I was bummed he was an innocent, naive little sociopath tendency having cinnamon bun and he didn't deserve that fate )

I've gotten to the point where I almost refuse to get attached to characters anymore. I've been conditioned by shows like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. NO ONE IS SAFE. I think how I react to character deaths really depends on the circumstances of the death. Was it painful? Long? Did they struggle against it? Did they see it coming? Is death actually an escape from a crapsack world? I think the last time a character death really got to me was when I read Harry Potter (the first time lol). By far, the worst kinds of character deaths are:
1. Beloved Pet (especially if they did it to save their hoo-man TT^TT)
2. ONLY ONE TWIN.

My reaction is pretty much only "WHAT NO HEY NO I'M AGAINST IT.". Then continue the reading/watching.

I remember a stamp on DA that summarized perfectly what I felt :

I saw someone talking about Full metal Alchemist. I was so SAD when I saw Hughes dies. I loved that character (he was meant to be loved anyway, at least I think), he found a lot of things and everything... then dies because the story would be so much shorter if he told everything to Mustang. And the little girl, Nina, yeah. It was purely horrible.

If it's just a sudden, senseless death that adds nothing to the story, it annoys me - sometimes enough to stop reading. Killing people just for shock is cheap and does nothing for the readers other than make them feel angry.

Game of throne and the prime I stopped watching. I just gave up on that story, theres wasnt many character left I cared about and I dont trust the story not to axe those off too for 'gritty realim' so before it killed off ALL the characters I just stopped watching it. I hate the 'good guys lose, the bad guys get a slap on the wrist' approach. Fantasy is going through the same thing mainstream comics did in the 90's, the grimdark phase

@Zannen00 Whoa sounds tragic, I have heard of the game but never really played or watched a play through of it. It is WW1 and nobody really won that war.

@amymoneyearnsfo I have not watched Magi, but a lot of people have been recommending it. The other characters are awkward??

@Cielle Oh God but that is all Walking Dead and Game of Thrones is. Seeing people die. I personally enjoy watching The walking dead game and show, but sometimes it is over kill. Like some characters didn't deserve to die the way they did or it seemed too soon you know.

@elixiadragmire you have a story?? and yeah know the feel. I have one character that I was thinking off killing them off, but they are a fav to my friends and I dont know what to do anymore...

Yeah you're right, but something in my head always tried to figure out a way that they're not really dead... But then they are, once I'm sure they're not coming back, then I can accept it... But it takes a second.
I don't know if his death was necessary or not, but it did make me feel the reality of their situation with Kira a little more gravely since I didn't expect it at all, but it made the story feel a bit more critical for me, if that makes any sense haha.

But when a character I really like dies I'm just like " e.e..... okay.... slumps" Then probably cry a bit, then try to hide it from my brother saying I'm weird for devoting such emotion to a fictional character.
Sometimes though I can see it coming a mile away, like in HTTYD2 where Stoic was being all bad ass and best dad ever then ofcourse, that happens to him. I still cried anyways.

I stopped watching the tv-show as well - partly for this reason, but also because it's like they had a rape-quota they needed to meet, and it just got offensive and ridiculous.

Also, as a big fan of the books, I was getting seriously put out by the repeated, senseless changes to the events in the books, where the showrunners' only mission seemed to be to add more rape, more death and more violence for the sake of making it "gritty". This, in a story that originally contains 11 year olds training to be professional assassins. It didn't NEED more grit, is what I'm saying.

I think about it for hours and days on end and imagine myself crying in the corner. Quite often the characters HAVE TO die for the sake of the story, and it's a good thing in that sense... but you just come to love the characters so much at the same time ><

Arghh it hurts so much more when the significant other of your OTP dies because you want your OTP to tie the knot and live happily ever after and and and have babies and seal the deal and I can't even. A good example of this would be Gurren Lagann(those who watched this know who I'm talking about). Alas, times heals all wounds in the end, right? :'D

Oh yeah. The worst part is, TTGL did it TWICE. When I'd just about gotten over the first one, they did it again! And it was even worse the second time. ;_;

@stephanielopez - I personally find that a good portion of the character designs look awkward and their behaviors often feel uncalled for, situation to situation. It's a dark political drama that tries to disguise itself as a kid-friendly comedy and you really have to go in with that mentality right away. The magic system is friggen AMAZING and remains to be one of the biggest reasons why I stayed, but other than that most of the story feels like torture.

If you haven't already read or watched it, I really don't recommend to put your emotions through it if you don't have to. Even as new chapters are released now, fans bellyache every week how much they are scared for the lives of their favorite characters. We're on the edge of a global scale war at this moment. Just this last chapter that was released, made so many people ANGRY at one of my three favorite characters, half the fans were calling it bad writing and slamming both the character and the writer. If you absolutely have to get into the series, try to stay away from the fanbase if possible.
