So as a creator, I can understand the disappointment when people don't comment on your stuff. But as a reader, I can also understand some reasons why people don't comment. Sometimes there's just nothing to say and you don't want to annoy the creator with repetitious or insignificant comments. Sometimes just 'liking' the page works best.

But then there's more specific reasons: for me, one of the main reasons I don't comment sometimes is because I forget the character names. Seriously, if the names aren't in the description or someone hasn't used them in the comments, it can take me a long time to scroll back up and try to find it used in the comic. And yeah, I have to use the character names when commenting about them, because it's just embarrassing to keep saying 'that dude' or 'that chick' and wonder if the author's disappointed you don't remember their character's name.

And the other most common reason for me is just not having the energy. I fluctuate between commenting on everything I read to just 'liking' everything because I'm tired/depressed and I want to show creators that I still care about their work.

Sooo what are some reasons you guys don't leave comments sometimes? Or, alternatively, what are some of the comments you leave the most (i.e. puns and jokes, comments on the art, comments on the characters, etc.)

forgetting names.............. bloody names. i do it so often. even if the names in the description i still hesitate.

i think im less likely to comment if im reading on mobile, which i do more and more now. when im reading on mobile it tends to be a 'when i have a spare minute' case, and i dont wanna get caught by my classmates mid comic comment. im very socially anxious and over guarded is why. its also like, a whole nother click away.

but typically its the fact i have nothing to say. i should get more into the habit of just complimenting something nice - a particular pose, or expression, the gesture or composition in a page. but usually im just too turned off to notice?

@punkarsenic The name thing actually kind of worries me because my future comic is going to have a bunch of fantasy names in a fictional language, but I plan on using names in the description of each page and having a character page for readers to click on. I love when people have character pages.

Oh, I haven't even thought about mobile users. :open_mouth: That's interesting to know! And I should do the same, but sometimes it's hard not to feel like a nerd when I'm the only one going "ooh I love the composition on this page!! and the way your colors reflect the mood of the scene is great!"

mmmm character pages... sweet sweet character pages..... i like that idea

and yeah, i guess its a nerdy kind of comment, but as an artist its my favourite thing to get comments abt. i have a friend on tumblr who reblogs my art w things like 'ugh the movement!! the balance!!' and honestly. its such a high

I usually don't comment, mainly because... I have nothing to say?
And I read most often on the app than on desktop, finding it much harder to write on the phone then.

And the readers... They already have written such witty comments, that it's just a pure joy reading them instead of commenting :joy:

If and WHEN I leave a comment, I write really lengthy ones, praises mostly xD And it's kind of sad when the creator doesn't comment back?
I get it if there's extremely many, like 300+ and such, but just my comment and nothing else?
Just want it to feel like it was worth my time to write it, that's all!

@punkarsenic Same here! I'm happy to get any kind of comments on tumblr, even if it's just keyboard smash, but specific feedback is always the most helpful.

I usually don't comment. I don't want to be annoying to creators, and I often don't know what to say what I haven't said on other pages.

The only reasons for me to comment are when it's a comic of a friend that is underappreciated and deserves love.
Or if I thought of somethng very witty to say and there aren't many comments yet.
Or when I finished binge-reading a comic and want to give some appreciation to the author. This usually ends up being an essay full of praises... Which probably makes the author feel really awkward and uncomfortable, but whatever haha.

@Chopythes True, there are a lot of witty comments that I just end up thumbing up instead of trying to make my own.

Yeah, I could see the disappointment there. I feel like lengthy comments that are really in-depth are top priority in the reply list, and everything else can just be thumbed up or something. Of course, it'd be nice if we were actually notified when a comment of ours was thumbed up...other people might find it spam-y, but I'd at least know that people knew I was reading and enjoying their comments.

I too have little to say. I'm not a very jokey person and that seems to be the majority of comments. Either than or "wow! Damn! Next more!"

@miesmud Yeah, I hate to admit it, but especially if it's a popular comic that already has like 300+ comments, I usually don't feel the need to add on. But if it's underappreciated and has like 5 comments, I try to contribute something, and definitely if it's a friend's comic.

I can't speak for every creator, but if I ever got an essay of appreciation I'd be incredibly honored and motivated to work even harder. I think it's great that you take the time to do that. :grinning:

Sometimes, I just don't know what to say.

for me it's A) don't have enough time to, B) have nothing interesting to comment about, or C) there's already a lot of comments on the chapter and I feel like mine while be lost in the mass of comments.

Sometimes I'm just too tired. I like to read before sleeping, and I'm not always awake enough to write a sensible comment I won't regret the next morning (a bit like drunk texting haha). I usually do comment though, unless I just don't have anything to say.

Sometimes I can't come up with a witty comment or I feel that I don't have the time if the comment I have in my head is long.

Part of it is because I've been burned one too many times over the years. I'm not good at wording, so a mini-essay comment that I genuinely meant as a compliment gets mistaken as a criticism or something else entirely. I'm sick and tired of that happening. I'd rather not comment than have that happen again.

Oh gosh, usually for me it's I can't remember how to spell the dang name (it'll be a crazy fantasy/Sci-fi name too), so I feel like if I spell it wrong the author will murderize me. I see it's a pet peeve of a lot of creators on the forum for people to get a character's name wrong, and I don't want to step on any toes. ;u;

For me mostly it's to keep a low-profile. :nerd:

I usually don't comment because there is no reason.

Usually my comments are like a reply to the authors description, so if there's nothing to reply I often don't comment, cause it feels like i'm just reading instead of interacting with someone, also If the story isn't catching my attention or got me lost I won't comment, maybe just something like; "god i'm lost, gotta re-read the whole thing" So basically if there isn't any specially interesting in the page I won't comment, I need to see a cameo, there should be a plot twist, an improvment or an interesting composition overall, I need to note something in page to comment, otherwise it's just meh, and actually over the time I'll stop following the comic.

It indeeed bothers if the author does not reply (in the case of comics with little fan base) but for me isn't kind of a big deal, it bothers but i can rol with that, An example of a great author that is commited to feedback is Harkill, in his comic HeLL(P)3 he often replies to coments, his description seems also like a coment or a gag about the comic itself, and there's always an easster egg on every page, everything going by the hand with stonnishing and marvelous visuals, it just clicks

I mostly don't comment because I can't think of anything to say. I'm not one for speculation or reading deeply into the story because I'd rather let the story unfold and give the author a chance to surprise me. (Besides, I don't want to be proven wrong anyway :smirk:)

ppl have got the names wrong for characters in my comic in comments before and it is a bit of a 'oh no. i havent been clear enough. how do i fix this' moment, combined with not knowing how to be like 'oh actually its not x its y' but id rather get them comments than no comments.

now getting pronouns wrong. thats happened too. and i had No Idea how to correct it so jus ignored the comment instead.
