As a Christian myself, I've thought about doing a lot of Bible story comic. There isn't THAT big a market for it, its very niche, but then again a lot of markets on the internet are niche. But I kept scrapping them because of one common problem when adapting the bible.
The biggest challenge of creating a comic based off of Bible stories is that, the Bible works as more of a history book and parables that are told, its simple and too the point, not too much in depth about who some of these people are or what they are thinking, its a record more or less not so much trying to be a novel. And because of that its hard and tricky to make an adaptation. A straightforward one, while accurate, can be bland and dull, but take too many risks and you could end up creating a bad story or offending a lot of people.
There's a lot of awesome inspiration for characters and settings though, like the Cherubim from the book of Ezekiel, the aforementioned stories, and more, but its hard to adapt the stories themselves unless you have a twist or have stories based off them.Stuff like Veggietales told the bible stories in a more kid friendly version, while staying as true as possible with a few twists (( Joseph and Moses' stories were done in the west)), and the Chronicles of Narnia has a bunch of characters based from the Bible ((Aslan and his death and resurrection are akin to Jesus and His own death and resurrection)).
Like a lot of people above had said you can add your artistic liberties while being respectful to the original source, like the Alexander Hamilton and Prince of Egypt routes, but you can also take the Brother Where Art Thou ((Where it was basically the Oddeysy)) and The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe ((Story of Jesus)) approach where the bible story your telling is subtly done and is more a parallel.
Or just do a comic with Christian themes and not so much basing it off a story from the Bible, I'm kinda doing a mix of all of the above suggestions with my own comic, Freak of Nature, and I'm planning on doing another comic with the focus being on Angels.
Hope that advice helps, can't wait to see what you make ^^
