I'd have to dig through my old Drunkduck (which is now called "The Duck" apparently... wow, it's been a long time) to find it, because it must have been like 12 years ago, but I once had a comment that stuck with me forever due to being so astonishingly arsey. It was pretty much:

"This comic is poorly written and drawn, I don't understand why people like it."
To which I responded something like, "I understand, I'm still learning and trying to improve. You don't have to read it if you don't like it."
Then we get to the really cringey part which was the response of:
"Well I'm going to keep reading it because I think it's really interesting that your comic has more readers and likes than mine in spite of being so bad. I want to try to understand why."

I've had other people say similar things to this effect over the years, though this one was the least sly, just the most open and blatant expression of "I'm trying to comprehend what human weakness you must be exploiting, how you are hacking/cheating in order to make people like your work which is objectively worse than mine and shouldn't be enjoyed."
The sad thing is, the answer is really simple and I'm always happy to share it: I prioritise making my comics easy to read, so the sequence of events is usually very clear with by-the-book panelling choices (the book in question being Making Comics by Scott McCloud, obviously), and my characters are always introduced in scenes that establish their personality and role with zero subtlety so you know exactly what their deal is and why you should like them. It's really that basic and anyone could do it if they put their desire to be understood above their desire for people to think they're clever. :sip:

For one of my old stories on another platform, at least half of the readers stated that they hated the ending and wanted a HEA. So yeah, waking up to over 100 comments tearing my writing down wasn't fun. It definitely put me off writing for most of this year. I'd written a separate post earlier, asking for patience with my updates, as I wasn't up to writing too much due to everything that was going on with the pandemic, and family issues. Only a small number of readers were actually sympathetic, which is fair enough, but my view is that you should never hassle someone generally, especially for something you're consuming for free.

I was getting full-on paragraphs about why my writing was wrong and that I'd "tricked" them into thinking that the characters would remain as a couple. Only a handful of the readers actually mentioned that they could tell the way the story would end, based on cues I'd left.

This was one of the comments, which I can look back on now and laugh, but at the time it really upset me and made me realise how awful my writing was:

"You end the book like that? I get that you don't like this book anymore and want to end it (that's what I think I might be wrong) but seriously? It ends like that? That sucks! A least write an epilogue this book deserves that much... I really don't like criticizing authors when I don't write myself but this ending is too abrupt"

"You should've just left this story incomplete! "

(Going back to reread some of the comments is so funny now lol)

I haven't received any negative comments on Tapas yet, but I do remember receiving comments like "Gross", "Horrible", "Give up", "Hopeless", etc. in another site. I assume it was a troll, because, they left similar comments under other authors works, as well.
When it comes to having no comments under a new chapter, I assume that maybe the readers don't have any questions or can't come up with something, which is understandable. Them, giving my work a shot and taking time to read it is good enough.

Someone telling me to basically go fuck myself because my comic was on hiatus lmao I blocked them though because if they can't be nice they don't get free entertainment

Edit: I can't believe how mean people have been to you guys about your comics, that's honestly horrible... People are so full of hate and just wanna hurt strangers on the Internet huh

What a troll! Was that all at once, or did they wait for each episode to come out and bless you with their presence? And then find you on Webtoons? Creepy stuff. :anguished:

It was all at once on webtoons, but that was three years ago and I deleted that old webcomic due to personal reasons

Oh Lord some of these are just horrible. I don't understand why people feel the need to get so personal with their hate, it's alarming!
I remember many many years ago I got a comment on one of my comics that just completely ripped it apart, and the OP got real personal for some reason. I'm pretty sure it was just a troll because some of the things they were saying were just vile and I remember thinking 'Who are you and why are you so angry at a stranger'? I mean, the comic was a load of crap, but it was something they were consuming for free with no expectations, y'know? Baffling!
I've also had the opposite end of the spectrum back when I used to write fanfiction. I basically ended my most popular fanfic with an open ending regarding whether the main characters lived or died and basically set this one person off actually begging for clarity. She messaged me A LOT about it and then went onto the other stories I was writing to ask about the other one. Quite flattering hahah!

I don't get enough comments to get hate lol.

I remember some weirdo commenting an uncomfortable sexual thing about my art way back on deviantart, coming back under few different accounts, but then disappearing because he either got bored of being blocked, or was banned from the site for being a sexist asshole.

another weirdo sending me a note asking me if i'm into [insert literally every thing that makes me highly uncomfortable], leading me to doing an 180 and deleting my DA account which I initially just planned to abandon.

thanks!

I draw obscure fanart of obscure characters and monsters mostly for a dead fandom that has a contingent of people that hate my guts for whatever reason, no wonder i don't get a lot of comments

I once got a comment (on a different site) that said:

"First, and probably last comment lol"

Couldn't you just post 'first' and leave like normal people? But that not where the story ends. I got another comment, the same day that said:

"Second"

Not on Tapas, but one person said my art is awful and no one wants to look at it.

You're not objective with your opinions if you have a beef with someone, tho.

"I lost my interest in your story as quickly as I became intrigued by it. It's so slow-paced."

Giving that the person telling me this is only interested in fact-ass comics, yeah mate my novel ain't for you. But I'm not gonna put a weird comment down your work because I might not like it, it's free content we're talking about get a grip. D:
