Scary Dreams and what they mean

I don't know if I talked about this before, but I had this dream a while ago. I was at work when I heard this loud commotion outside. I look out the window and I see this huge mob of people, holding up blank white signs, shouting angerly at the building. Naturally, I was afraid as well as everyone else in the building. What is it something the company did or said or was it something that one of the employees did or said? It was soon time for people to start going home. We where all near the entrance, and so was the angry mob. So we were all contemplating on how to get outside without getting torn apart. So we all made the wise decision that each on of us would book it to our cars, one at a time. So I few guys went outside before I made my move. I made it outside. I looked behind me and there are just these angry people swarming around the helpless employees. As I got close to my car and got inside and locked the door just before more people swarmed the car. They screamed at me, they banged on the windows, they started to shake the car back and forth. That's when I woke up, gasping for air.

So I've had some thoughts about what I dreamed about and I think this is what I feel the outrage culture has become. Thanks to social media platforms such as Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, people can now have a free hand to harass you, mock you, and ever worse, doxx you because there is something that they don't like and they want to end you.

So has anyone here ever experienced a dream like that?

i guess i understand this though it's not something i fear. maybe because i'm used to people baring their opinions without fear as is and also having dealt with backlash for certain things i've said or done be it online or off (tho never to very extreme scales).

i think my nightmares related to voice or speech usually have me unable to say anything. screaming soundlessly in a dangerous situation. trying to voice something but the words don't come out or aren't heard or are just outright ignored. i always assumed it to be a manifestation of my feelings that regardless of what i say either no one will hear me or no one will care which is why my bouts of silence don't surprise me anymore and why as much as i hate it i've forced myself to get used to being isolated or ignored.

the dreams i've had that i've found genuinely scary usually involve death or impending mortal danger. like i've had recurring nightmares where i'm trying to escape these complex labyrinths with "something" chasing me or just outright conflicts where the outcome is my end. i never got a solid understanding of the latter but the former i think stemmed from feelings of being trapped or stuck and wanting to "escape".

dreams are weird and the way they take our internal conflicts and amplify them into something much bigger is always...interesting. i guess that's why they tend to fascinate me much more than reality.

I've been having some dreams about the ISS! If we're talking psychology I believe it's because I've been thinking about aliens. 🛸 In my dreams, I'm aboard the ISS. But am completely alone. There's such a horrid sense of desolation and it would make me so sad if there weren't other civilizations. Something about there being nothing but empty planets... Yeah. I mean, most planets are probably empty... But yeah.

A lot of my scary dreams sound weird but were scary when I was dreaming it. Lately I haven't had any nightmares but just some really random stuff. The most recent dream was just me smoking inside my room and my subconscious was telling me to stop because it would make my room smell bad (i don't really like to smoke).

I started to write down dreams I had after I woke up so I wouldn't forget it later and I found this gem of a novel while cleaning out my notes app:

(copy pasted word for word) He wan’t trying to skip class but he decided to parkour up the side of the teachers lounge which was like 3 floors tall of open space. I climbed up the side and got up on the top and a security guard saw me and she was an older lady and she told the doctor who for some reason was also a teacher on me and then I had to drop down floors and I tried to go to classs but they were all looking for me to punish me so I went home on my skateboard. But they were already at my house and the police were in front of my house with their cruiser. So I took out my lighter and tried to blow up their car but it didn’t so I went to a nearby gas station and grabbed a gas tank. I wasn’t sure if it would work but I threw a tank at the police car that was driving towards me and set it on fire and it exploded me halfway across the world. But everything was actually a video game and it was played by the VA of this person and some other character that he did but he was a big lover of this game. His character loved saving the world even though he looks ugly and scary. He was a nature loving person. But that was just his video game character. The real life guy was into weed so I decided to find some for him to get on his good side. I called up a bunch of different hotels looking for some but I couldn’t really find any except for one person who said that there was some weed there and the manager said that the requirement for getting it was to take the job but she said it was okay and it wasn’t mandatory.

I haven't had a dream like that, but I do search for the meaning of my dreams if it seems like a message. It's not easy to differentiate what's just noise from when we were awake, a simple nightmare, and a dream with meaning. Also, not all the parts of the dream have a meaning.

Such confusion makes me use the tarot to confirm, but most of the time it's about internal changes. I don't know what's in the mind of people who made all those websites with the meaning of dreams, but most of the time it's a negative interpretation and the worst possible. So don't get scared if they say it means you'll die or things like that.
What helps the most when searching for a meaning, it's focusing on the thing that grabbed your attention the most and your feelings. My guess is that your dream was just a nightmare, and nightmares can be fueled by anything that affects you negatively; in this case social media. If you think that isn't the case, then what remained in your mind the most after waking up? The white signs, the mob, the screams, the company? Then you work around the meaning of the most important thing to interpret the meaning. Naturally, if you identify with the answers of that element. If not, just discard it.

I've heard from a therapist that bad dreams can be more your brain running simulations than the symbolism itself. It wants to make sure it's prepared for the scary thing, no matter how unreasonable or how poorly it puts things together for you to face. Sometimes it's definately more surreal and might need interpretation, but sometimes it's that need to be alert.

I had a LOT of "missed the bus and got stuck in another city" dreams, because of my fears during university. I have them to this day, I try to use some lucid dreaming to turn them into something less anxious, but it's still always an exploration of me looking for the correct transportation, not missing the right time, not sleeping past my stop and hopefully going home.

Recently though, a lot of running away/hiding from dangerous people dreams. I guess it came a bit from covid fears and news, but they end up being anything from cults to some vague figure that made threats and seems to want to act on them. Most of the time I can hide, but it's still horrible to wake up in cold sweat thinking it's still going to happen.
