The Plaguehide turned his head, the sun's last rays filling his eyes with life and color.
For a second, the Green could see how he must have looked when he was still alive. "You have so much potential."

"Potential?" The Poisonhide could not help himself. He scoffed. The only potential he had was the potential to be useless.

"Exactly. Potential. So many others have already chosen the path that they will walk on through life. Some choose well, some choose badly. But you...you have not chosen yet. I saw it in your eyes the first time we met. You were fleeing judgment, fleeing justice. And you were so afraid. So uncertain of your future. You intended to betray your friend, yet doubts plagued you."

Zendrayus ran a withered claw along his side, coughing. "I see that as potential. Here and now, you must come to a decision. Will you renounce your past deeds, and try to help Ebony on his journey, or will you simply continue on as you have, hiding? Running away?"

“I know you’re here, Rachel,” he murmured in a low, malevolent tone that caused me to tremble in fear. He definitely wasn’t in a place to talk meaningfully with me, and I wasn’t ready to deal with whatever this dream was actually about. “You can’t hide from me for long!” Oh, thank the heavens… he didn’t know I was ‘here’ here!

“This wasn’t supposed to happen,” he continued, getting louder with every syllable. “None of this was supposed to happen! You weren’t supposed to come back!” He suddenly disappeared with an angry buzz, only to relocate directly in front of the magic circle. I could see now that the darkness that had surrounded him was actually emanating from his entire body.

“Plus animus! Ego vi!” The magic circle hummed louder, and his scythe pulsated in response to his unhinged shouts. “I refuse to be the next victim in all of this!”

He shrieked mindlessly as the room filled with the dark vapor spewing from his physical form, clouding my vision.

I awoke covered in a cold sweat, strangely thankful for physics and any other related sciences that made it impossible for me to jump out of my own skin.

A few meters away, Aiden grinned but kept his focus on the intricate engine in front of him, his station nestled in the heart of the International Spaceport—a relic of the first Space Age, now transformed into a bustling hub of interplanetary travel.
“The day I need your ‘alpha assistance’ is the day pigs fly in space.”
Floating, Jake and Luis hit a glowing ball back and forth in a playful zero-gravity match.
Luis chuckled as he missed his shot. “That’s one point to Aiden!”
Jake groaned, stung by both Luis’s score and Aiden’s teasing remark. “All right, alright! No need to gang up on the alpha here.”
As neon-lit schematics flickered to life on the walls, they showcased intricate spaceship designs. Aiden, surrounded by parts in various repair stages, paused to glance at a holographic display streaming data.
Distractedly tapping his foot to some old Earth rock music from his earphones, Aiden’s perpetual tanned skin glistened with sweat. He delicately maneuvered around the damaged spaceship engine, his deft fingers treating the repair more as an art than a mere job. “Alright, buddy,” he whispered affectionately to the engine, “let’s figure you out.”

“Is that your only goal? To survive and be happy?”

“What more can I hope for?”

“Caught in the mess we’re in, we’ll need a lot more than luck and hope to earn a safe, happy life.”

“Whatever I thought Oliver was is not the truth.”

“The story… The story made him seem like he was intelligent, even witty. Is that how he seemed to you, too?” Not some mindless, mustache-twirling villain, right?

“Oliver was a persona adopted by a powerful demon lord. He was not real.”

“Well, his persona then. What was it like?” Crafting a persona requires intelligence and wisdom, right? Wouldn’t that mean… he could be reasoned with?

“It doesn’t matter what it was like! He never existed! To spend even one moment considering his past influence only adds to his demonic power!” Aleph slammed his war hammer into a nearby tree, splitting the trunk with a resounding crack.

I swallowed hard, frightened by his uncharacteristic rage. “I…” I took a few steps back, and Aleph’s eyes widened in sudden remorse.

“Little one, I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“No, no, I was just startled, that’s all. I’m sorry.” I scratched my right wrist absently at first. Once I realized I was doing it, I tried to stop but had little luck. “I shouldn’t have–”

“I am the one who wronged you. Do not apologize.”

“You should apologize to me!” a soggy voice called out from the treetop. “Knock softer next time!”

“Vernie?” Aleph shouted upwards in surprise. “Is that you?”

'The King does not entertain himself with such low-level beings like yourself, especially if not informed in advance...' the Hand replied, moving closer to Vertatis.

'Very well then,' the Leeach replied. 'If you don't see what is in front of you, we won't be wasting your time.' And he nodded to his dodgy companions as if they were all going to leave.

'Hold it,' Lëogan let out, almost in a whisper. 'This one you brought with... our former general. This one, where did you find her?'

'They were together. They entered the outskirts with a third one, a male Leonty. He fled like a coward, leaving these two behind.' and the Leech laughed.

“I did? Ha! But you were there too! Remember, Rae-Rae?”

“That’s hilarious, but no. Sorry.” It would have made a fun chapter in the web novel.
