There is so much fantastic music being created in every part of the world that sharing a song can often five you an easier entry point into a country's culture than paragraphs of description. So, I thought it would be fun if we shared songs from our places of origin, like a musical culture exchange. It's always nice to get exposed to something that you'd probably never run into yourself.
So, all you need to do is post a song from your own country. Define "own country" as you wish - some people live in a different country from the one they were born in, and it's up to them which one they more strongly identify with. It has to be by an artist from the chosen country. It doesn't have to be in its native language, but it would be nice if it was. Your reasoning for picking a song is up to you: it can be a song you love, or it can be something you feel is hilarious and share-worthy.
So, let me go first:
I will share a song by a Serbian singer who goes by the name Madame Piano. The song is "Da tebe nema" (literally "If it wasn't for you" or "If you didn't exist", but a translation more in line with the spirit of the English language would be "Without you"). I do not pay attention to a lot of Serbian music, but I always had a soft spot for her. I just recently listened to the album this song came from, and what I love about it is how stylistically diverse it is. There are songs that hint at Serbia's own rich musical tradition, but she also dabbles with Latin rhythms, Hinduistic and pagan imagery and, in the case of "Da tebe nema", oriental music.
I can't describe how much I love this song. I remember hearing it as a kid and being captivated by it. It has a regal, enchanting atmosphere that just sucks you in, and the lyrics are beautiful. Do you like it? Do you hate it? Opinions are welcome, as long as you post a song as well.
