So, I recently hit sixteen subscribers and I noticed a comment on my wall that genuinely startled me. One of my readers from another website followed me here. I suspected this might happen at some point, but I wasn't expecting it this soon. As I hadn't managed to really announce that I was moving my work anywhere. It inspired me to create this post and share my story with you all.
Let me explain. My series, The Devil's Colt: Rise of a Hunter was originally a fanfiction. That's not something I'm ashamed of. I've worked on this series for years and have written, rewritten, and edited it to the point that I have made it wholly my own. But now that the cats out of the bag, I feel the need to share this with you all. As I want to be one hundred percent transparent about where my inspiration came from.
I originally got the idea for this series from an Anime. The thing about this Anime, in particular, is that I really loved the setting, the world, the different factions and races. It was a really really neat idea that I haven't seen done before. Not to this extent at least.
The problem was I hated just about everything else about it. I hated the shallow, perverted, one-dimensional main character. I hated the way all the women were objectified and lacked any real semblance of agency throughout the series. There was so much potential, yet it felt squandered on another cheesey campy Harem Anime.
So I decided to write my own story instead and post it online. And the more I wrote, the more I fell in love with this story. It managed to get decently popular, and when I showed it to friends and family they all kept saying the same thing. "Why aren't you trying to make something out of this?" Over and over again they bugged me to turn this series into more than just a fanfiction. Which is why I'm here now.
I've since removed the fanfiction copy and rewrote it as a series that is wholly my own. It KILLED me to do that given how much support and what a strong fanbase I had developed. But it needed to be done. This is the next step for me, and the fact that I already have fans following me over to check out and support my new work makes me extremely happy.
It makes me feel like I really do have something here.
But I don't want to make this all about me. I want to hear your story as well. Specifically, where did the inspiration for your work come from? Share your process and your journey with me. Heck, link your work if you want to and I'll check it out. Looking forward to hearing from you all!
