Blurb:
The fate of the world of Qwé hangs in the balance, ruled by a dark and corrupt empire that controls the exports and imports of slaves, and a valuable magical substance known as Pollenium.
A Rebel Alliance is forming in defiance against the empire, but will they be ready for what is to come?
Magic, and how it works in the Nihilmere
The Nihilmere universeâs animating forces are known as Pollenium (Pollen), and are spread to all of the seven worlds by celestial Lepidoptera, known as; Mundus-Moths. The ancient Elysian used this raw magic to power their technology - their city, airships, and the very force that tethered them to their reciprocates, the Whisper-Moths who are distant descendents of the Mundus-Moth.
Pollenium can come in different forms:
-Dust (raw pollenium)
-Liquid (concentrated and processed pollenium, known as; mellarius)
-Solid (crystallised mellarius).
Pollenium is everywhere and is not always visible to the naked eye, however, usually can be seen in highly dense areas, such as ley-lines, the lifeforce upon which the worlds and all life that inhabit them depend.
How accessible is Pollen?
Since Pollenium can be mined by those with the knowledge on handling this material, it has a high transference and can be sold and traded - used in magic serums/potions and fuel to power aircrafts and other technology. Though, pollenium supplying/trading is strictly controlled by the emperor. Selling it without official papers could lead to capital punishments.
External magic-users vs Internal magic-users
There are two ways in which magic can be accessed: either through internal or external forces. Users who can generate magic within themselves use internal access; those who access Pollenium through other means use external access. Whether magic-users are considered internal or external, however, is determined by how the magic is used.
Internal is often associated with using the magic inside the body, and external is using magic outside of the body; regardless of how the magic is accessed.
External magic-users:
-Elysian (Active magic/natural ability)
-Elves (Active magic/natural ability)
-Mundus-Moths (Passive magic/natural ability)
-Whisper-Moths (Passive magic/natural ability)
-Seers (Active magic/natural ability)
Internal magic-users:
-Elder Dragons (Active magic/natural ability)
-Fae (Passive/mystery)
-Giants (Active magic/natural)
-Gods (Passive magic/bestowed ability)
Magic users without natural ability
Mages/Wizards/ Deragos (Active Magic) are not preternaturally magical beings, and are seen as impure dark magic (unnatural), and are able to access unnatural internal magic by consumption, or deity intervention (borrowed magic), be it blood magic or through a blood pact. This form of magic commonly involves the blood of the the following;
-Celestial being (eg Seer)
-Demon
-Elder Dragon
-Giant
-Fae
Although Deragos access magic from an external source, being blood of an elder dragon, it is still considered Internal magic because it is used to affect themselves, not external objects. Mages/Wizards can also use internal magic, though mainly use external, directed towards objects, artefacts, and other beings, as the risks associated with internal magic is too high.
Cost of using magic
However magic is accessed, there are limits to the amount that can be used - in essence, there is a magical power source for each user that will be depleted as used, and must be replenished. When using a compatible source, this process is efficient and sustainable. For example, an Elysian channelling Pollenium through their own Whisper-Moth will have a ready supply of magic; a dragon generating their own magic will likewise be able to regenerate efficiently. An Elysian accessing magic through their own life-force (internal access), or a dragon attempting to channel Pollen through a Whisper-Moth (external access), for example, risks more severe depletion and other consequences.
If a magic-user accustomed to internal access uses an external source, they can drain the life of everything around them, causing decay, and because of this, it can be very limiting once the resource has been exhausted. Similarly, if a magic-user accustomed to external sources, uses internal access, they slowly kill themselves because they are tapping into their own life-source, and because of this, their magic is very limited.
Mages/Wizards cost of magic:
Mages/Wizards use material components, such as magical artefacts and ingredients - for example, a special crystal - or ordinary ingredients which gain magical traits when used in a specific way. These can be plants, minerals, even substances from the animal kingdom - such as the heart of a harpy; though, any ingredient coming from a living creature is known as dark magic, as the ingredient normally entails the death or injury of the original owner. Even mined Pollenium can be used, though it may have to be combined with other ingredients to achieve certain results. Using materials may also mean the inscription of a symbol in the air or on the ground. The magic-user may have to hold the ingredients in their hand, lay them out in a pattern, burn them or offer them to the winds, or simply be in their presence - as with an altar.
Cost - for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Elysian cost of magic:
Elysian rely on their Whisper-Moth in order to tap into the source of their magic and control an element. It is an active magic that requires concentration and mental discipline. They can only control the element based on the senses of touch, sight, and hearing.
The limit of their powers vary for each Elysian, and may be either limited from their mental capacity or the amount of Pollen their Whisper-Moth is able to absorb from around them in the atmosphere.
Cost - Exhaustion/fatigue that can ultimately lead to death of both the Elysian and their Whisper-Moth.
An Elysian without a Whisper-Moth would have to use their own life-force to generate magic and access their elemental power. This access is not replenishable and will cause extreme weakness, illness, and eventually death.
Magic in materials and objects
Some objects and materials can store magic, to allow limited external access.
