height differences are the funniest visual things to me, which is usually why my tall characters tend to tower over the other characters.

I find height gaps fun to write in my novels just not to draw lol. My male lead is a foot taller than my FL, and had to resist the urge to pick her up in my most recent released chapter. I have another character who is 3'7 and her best friend is 6'7, so obviously their dynamic is crazy imbalanced, but they are really the same person in two different bodies

I really like the physical character design of my male lead in "A Dozen morning Glories." I was originally worried he'd seem too much like Kattar from a cursory description, but he's very very different once you get beyond the most simple aesthetic descriptions like brown boy with black hair and slanted eyes.

Kattar: Is very slightly above average height. Thin to moderate build, as he's never been super muscular, even when he worked out. He has very long hair, a sharp nose, a light brown complexions, and an over all "pretty" look to him.

Dominic: Is short, muscular (I was thinking of natural body builders from the 1900s when I designed him.) his hair is slightly longer than average, but not long, he's much much browner than Kattar, with a small, round nose, hooded eyes, and a youthful, but not pretty look.

My editor was like, "so he's like Kattar, but opposite" but I was legitimately worried that a cursory description of eyes, complexion and hair texture would make people think they looked basically the same lol.

Interesting fact. Essence is my FL who looks the least like any of my other FLS.

I have a tendency toward middle weight or chubby girls who are curvier. When I have thin characters, they tend to be petite (short and thin.)

She is probably the only character I have with a combination of all the things I don't know how to draw at once lol. Very thin girls, tall girls, girls without many curves. I even made her face a lot squarer than the faces that I usually draw.

All in all, I think this makes her more distinct in the realm of my own characters, but nearly everything about Essence strays away from the conventions I typically go with, both in personality and in visual design, but that just makes me love her more and be more proud of this design, because she really pushed my imagination and my skills as an author and artist to new realms.

I am just really really proud of her character design

When I first started designing my ML Dominic Giang I was worried he would look too much like Kattar. Now that he's fully designed, that feels city, but their base designs were both brown Asian boys with slanted eyes (though Kattar is half Mexican.) and round faces, and in the vague, it sounded too similar.

when finished, he's one of my favorite designs, and one of the most unique looking ones too i think. My first male lead who is a body builder lol.

My fun fact about David's design is that his first design was really really ugly. I don't know why 16-year old me gave him shoulder length hair at first...but it was BAD lol. He looked like Lord Farquad from Shrek, I wish I had a picture of it

But let's enjoy how nice he looks now~

he's too pretty

but shoulder length hair can work if it's cut right lol. Kattar used to have shoulder length hair but it grew out since he's not been able to go to the salon (or rather, been unwilling to go.)

Almost everything about Chili's design is done to make him look sleazy, but he's not actually evil lol.

Slicked back hair, sharp teeth. Crooked tie that he usually has regardless of the outfit.

Mora has vitiligo, but it's purple because of a combination of other skin irregularities she has. Though these skin irregularities are not tied to the fact that she is a phant, she hides them because they would make her stand out, which will draw attention that could still end up being dangerous.

Verner George seems a lot more like the typical action male lead than is son does. He's playful, cheerful , friendly, and impulsive, while his son is very quiet and reserved.

Here's an interesting fact about Alicia's character design, visually. I had zero idea what she looked like when I started writing the story, so I just developed her more and more over time, adding descriptions here and there until I created a fully fleshed-out character. I love that she doesn't look like the traditional romance heroine, and yet every part of her designs serves to help her appear more delicate. Her bouncy curly hair, round face, large eyes, plump, curvy figure etc.

She starts the story appearing to be entirely a damsel, but as it progresses, the less of a damsel she is, and the more anti-damsel things you find that she's done her entire life. She may be soft, but that doesn't mean she's weak, and when chaos happens, she's willing to step up for the people she loves.

Elyn’s designed is based on me with a few added liberties. Oh and the outfit she wears is inspired by the scouts uniforms from Attack on Titan. I also just really really like cloaks

Here are some thoughts on the design of the characters that form a love pentagon in my story.

Corrine is a stereotypical Romance-fantasy protagonist even down to the pink hair.

Alex (the titular Duke of the Abyss) was made to look like the most typical Male lead of a Romance-fantasy story. I reused most of the design with slight alteration for Rose (the secondary FL). This sort of makes sense since, (check notes), they are supposed to be half-siblings.

Early-on, I realized Arobase (A secondary ML) sort of looked like one the rice krispies mascot, so I embraced that fact and took even more inspiration from the mascot’s color palette. My other inspiration for him was the European comic character Spirou.

Nives is the wild card in all of this. Conceptually, she was one of the earliest characters created but also a lot of change. Each chapter, there was slight alteration to her character. I kept increasing her height because I thought it was funny. For most of the early production, I had no idea of what she looked like without her mask. On a whim, I decided she was trans. I finalized her design for a drawing for pride month where I settled on her current look.

My comic is mostly anime-inspired, but there are a few designs influenced by the newspaper comics I grew up reading.

Terry was (perhaps subconsciously) based off Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes, while Katrina's hat was inspired by the lesser-known character Eudora from Peanuts.

My inspiration comes from various comic strips (like there’s a lot of comics I draw inspiration from idk if I can list them here it might blow this thread up ) and farm animals.
