(Note: I'm pretty well aware that this type of discussion has the potential to become an absolute shitshow. So please for the love of all that is mighty please keep the conversation civilized)
So, just two days ago, one of my friends was grouped together with me and some other girls for a group project in Arabic (yes, I have Arabic classes). It was choose-your-own group, so we are allowed to choose who our members would be as long as it didn't exceed ten members and no one was left out.
A group of all boys sat next to us. We were planning about what type of roleplay/video we'd do, and since the project involved popular media (as we had to recreate the scene from whatever form of media we choose but in Arabic), the conversation escalated to just that. As the boys were planning and discussing about which members we'd trade (they needed some girls and we needed some boys) my friend pointed at the guys and said "if I were in your group I'd make all my BL dreams come true" and of course, all of them responded with something along the lines of "no!!"
During lunch time, my friend, me, and one other guy from the other group (he was my seatmate)were talking and the conversation once again shifted to the BL stuff. She said some stuff, including "I'm just a proud fujoshi" and "I bet you're an uke" (or something like that I can't quite remember sorry). He said that he was straight, and I told her to stop. I think she took it as a joke, because she said "okay fine you're a bottom" to me. And that made me PRETTY UNCOMFORTABLE. I don't know if it makes it worse, but she does know I'm bisexual.
I think she was joking the entire time but yikes did I feel embarrassed on her behalf like I had the urge to apologize for her to my seatmate and his friends.
Anyway, for some reason I thought I'd never see people who act like that in real life? They kind of just seem like something I'd see only on the internet. For one, I don't mind fujoshis, or when someone calls themselves one. I don't mind people liking BL/Yaoi, especially since there are less BL/Yaoi comics and anime with harmful tropes nowadays compared to ~5 years ago. I'm also acutely aware that a good number of fujoshis don't act like this, some are also probably LGBT (as a matter of fact that friend is ace). The problem kind of arises when the loud minority of fujoshis start applying these fictional tropes into reality.
I think it's not even really a problem with fujoshis and BL, rather it's more on the behavior some of them have?
Anyway what are your thoughts? andpleasedonthurtmethisismyopinionandhowirememberthings
