My Hero Academia. but im not that bothered by the comment cause its just because of the school setting
@phenylketonurics It is actually super interesting what people compare things to and trying to figure out how they got there. People actually pointing out your inspiration is weird. I know anyone who's watched a decent amount of robot anime can recognise my Obsidian as heavily inspired by Ranga-mails (they're gorgeously designed robots I have no shame admitting how heavy the influence was) but if anyone said it was the same plot I'd get so sad.
@shazzbaa Haha I'm pretty prepared for it now. What concerned me about it was that I was getting the Voltron while planning/preparation phase which is why I felt the need to go watch it. Having done that I was comfortable enough to say it wasn't anything like the same and should it turn up in the comments I'm prepared to politely explain otherwise.
I don't mind so much when it's closer to the actual inspirations. Or if it's more of an "oh so sorta like this?". I'd happily talk about the influences on my work (as above with the Rangas) and how it influenced me. Actually talking about influences and behind the scenes is one of my favourite things.
@BobbyjoeXforgotensb Ahh yes school and powers. My Hero Academia is definitely the only one to have ever done that before lol.
Of course there's the equally frustrating "did you know your character looks just like X?" and then you have to go look them up and then you can't unsee it.
And does anyone have things they secretly wouldn't mind being compared to? For example, as a giant robot genre, you know you're hitting the right dark buttons when people start calling you an Evangelion rip off. It's equally as wrong, but at least NGE did lots of break through stuff for the genre.
I have yet to get this problem with my most recent creation tho I’m sure it will get a title of like avatar or... I donno maybe Steven univers do to how magic works? Either way imma be honest when I say that Ive never actually get upset in the past when this happens. I enjoy hearing that my work reminds people of other things they’ve read or watched, especially if it’s something they’ve enjoyed l.
I do this myself when i talk to other friends on the internet about things I “need” to watch and read: it’s like Narnia, it’s like vampire the masquerade, it’s like sailor moon. Similarities should never be seen as bad especially if it’s similar to a piece of work that culture deems important enough to remember. After all, we’re all looking for something similar to things that make us happy and tickle the muse and adventure part of our brains. So personally I’m instrested and excited to get my first “so this is like” to see what pops out at people first, it’s also a little cheating cause then I can use that quote when telling other people about my work 
But I do understand why it upsets people.

i don't really care that much when someone says it's basically something else... i do my stories for me. and if other ppl like them too. then sweet lets chat about it.
I haven't got such comment because not many people read it and the story is kind of weird, but people might assume it's basically another cliched magic story with an angsty teen as a lead 
Weird things is people said they imagine the lead character looks like Diego from Go Diego Go
I had a book I was writing back in high school. When I explained the plot to people they would say "So it's basically XXX Holic, yeah?" I've still never read or watched the manga or anime for it XD It's certainly a little frustrating to not be acknowledged for my own creative process, but someone else's.
I'm afraid I don't have a link to the story, though a friend of mine and I once tried to draw it as a comic. I think we only got like, four or so episodes in until we burned out and stopped posting it? 
I don't really get many comments and I've never received a "So this is basically x" comment but if I'd have to imagine one then it would be "Oh so its basically -insert any popular shonen manga-"
I don't know if this is ALWAYS a problem.
The way I see it, if it's been done before in a similar way just mix it up a bit. If you get these comments a lot from different people it says more about your work than it does about them. There's nothing wrong with admitting your work is similar to someone else's. You can either go with it or change it.
Sometimes these comparisons are half-baked though. I had several people mistake OC art of my character Arkade for My Hero Academia fanart, purely because his hair was green. His hair wasn't even the same shade of green. It looked really different. My conclusion was that they were just the types of people that make an anime their entire personality and project it on everything they see. There are quite a few people like that. My Hero has a lot of fans of this type.
It should be noted...
if you DID come up with something completely new and different. People would see it as strange and weird... and that would make them scared. They'd form a mob and burn it with fire, all the fire.
This hasn't happened to me yet, but I have mutants, sooo.... It' basically X-Men, right? (I actually did everything I could for a while to not use the word mutant because of that xD)
Haven't got anything like that yet. If they say it reminds them of this or that, depending. I'll admit that oh hey those were one of my inspirations and of course is influenced into it in some shape or form. Though if they say it's basically this.. I'll honestly take it as a grain of salt because sometimes you'll never know it's some kid wanting to be a troll or if they're genuinely being honest.

There's no need to be driven insane about it. People relating to real life or fiction is one of the reasons why people engages in created content these days. It's hard to be OG these days unless you start UN OG. Do not be ashamed of people thinking you ripped off anything.
I feel that, not one but TWO people started comparing my OC Seymour to the sleepy guy from My Hero Acadamia. Drives me crazy 
Many compare it to Tokyo Ghoul, and I'm going to capitalise on it because God damn I lov(ed) Tokyo Ghoul too.
Not a comic I have published yet but I told my ex back when we were together about the concept and storyline for a fantasy comci I want to make, here's a [based on memory] example of how that went:
Me: [insert long talk about the plot and the characters] and so they go to this lava/fire esque kingdom to meet the prince in that kingdom, and he's-
Him: Oh so it's like in adventure time
me: What
Him: Yeah, like the fire kingdom and flame princess in adventure time
Sometimes seeing a comparison between characters or elements of a story are fine with me, but other times it feels like even if it's not on purpose that you're being smashed with the "you're not original just a copy" hammer
My comic's in it's infancy so I've only had one of these so far, but I've had a single "this gives off strong Fairy Tail vibes" comment xD Which is pretty fair on the surface level, honestly. There's talk of magic and they work for a (Treasure Hunting) guild. I'm also a FT fan so I don't mind too much xD
But realistically they're not really that similar imo. FT is very "typical" shonen where they take high power characters and keep clashing them against higher and higher power opponents. The whole thing's a grand spectacle of explosions and trading blows, and pulling out trump cards. It's like comfort food and I appreciate that ^^
My comic is kind of the opposite: all of the characters (including the eventual antagonist) have fairly limited amounts of power, and notable flaws/weaknesses that they have to work with. I focus more on thinking outside the box to solve problems with what you have when raw power isn't available, or even isn't the best solution. A lot of my inspiration was actually drawn from games I've played this year that use different kinds of elemental combination systems xD
