Since you said that your OC is Asian he has to assume that the character is Asian. Therefore it's not racist. Besides, it's usually white people who get offended at this kind of stuff. Asian people wouldn't even care less.

I don't know how to put this but your friend is clearly an extremist and its not worth getting advice from them. Can I be honest with you? This is not an insult to your friend or me looking down on the efforts society makes to respect the social differences, the lower economic opportunities, the different hardships of less privileged ethnicities, "races" (from a purely genetic point of view, humans don't have "races", we ain't dogs), but our desire to be welcoming, to be just and not to slip into racism (which are all laudable and important and should be upheld) has made it difficult for us to walk that blurry line between sensitivity and bigotry.

Your friend is ignorant. Ignorant about the process of tanning? Ignorant about the concept of racism? Or maybe a tidbit jealous as well, knowing that your art truly is superior (very impressive) and wanting to maybe pinch you a bit? You know your friend better.

I am just a little bit annoyed by this concept of the depiction of a tanning character being in any way racist. My family is from the South of Europe. My mother is blond and blue-eyed. Every summer, she gets a good 2-3 shades darker than what you depicted with your character Jayden. So according to your friend my mother blackfaces every summer? I think I am getting a little offended myself, here.

well, i don't want to be rude but that friend of you is an idiot, or he has never seen someone with a tan, and of course, your character is, i assume, fishing at the beach, so, unless your friend goes to the beach wearing gucci boots, or dressed as someone in the oscars, then he is an idiot.
No, is not racist nor colorist, it has nothing wrong with it, and i can't see a valid reason of why someone would feel offended by it, he is one of "that people" i guess.

Your art is really good by the way, do not pay attention to that kind of comments, people with no perspective, you will find a lot of those in your life, so just ignore it

@Cavechan I actually gained some hope for humanity, since it's not new that unreasonably offended people like this exist, but seeing as everyone has unanimously agreed that there is nothing wrong with it, it makes me think such people are at least less common than I thought XD

I'm Filipino... Most of us get tanned like that, either working in the fields all day under the sun... Or when we go out to swim in the beach or a swimming pool lol

I'm probably gonna be repeating what other's have said, but this is too stupid for me to not say anything. There's NOTHING wrong with you or your art (which is very attractive btw, and do you have a comic ). Your friend on the other hand...

My brother (who's asian) worked at a kayak rental shop for one summer and he had pretty much the same tan, same with my friend (also asian) who played tennis for a whole summer. I'd say you drew him dressed appropriately, he's fishing what else is he supposed to wear smh. When I go hiking, camping, or some similar outdoor activity, I'm gonna wear clothes I don't mind getting dirty. I'm not gonna wear a dress, heels and carry around a little purse... that's ridiculous.

People like this just sound desperate to feel "woke" and smart about things they have very limited knowledge about. The mere fact that they are saying that having a tanned face is doing "the blackface" makes me think that they live too much on the internet and barely know anything about culture and life in general.
I have that type of skin that looks ghost pale but tans very easily, it is not like I'm changing my race when I tan.

Colorism has more to do with connotations, for example like consistently showing darker skinned people in lower paying unskilled jobs and lighter skinned people with more white collar jobs in higher positions.
