I think the word you're getting hooked on is "better."
A better written story with good pacing, no more time than necessary is spent on each part of the story, a better plot, the core story is interesting and immersive and follows its own internal logic, and better characters, the characters are interesting with their own arcs that make sense with the character development initially given to the reader.
But, here's the catch. You don’t need a better story, you need a better written. Story that's feasible to complete within a time period, a minimum viable product as Brookes Eggleston would say. Shorten a story or write a new one from scratch featuring one main character who goes through one arc that takes place in one main setting. Use that as a playground of sorts to learn how to write a concise piece of work and then turn it into a comic.
Edit: a "better" story and a "better written" story are not mutually exclusive, they can be one and same.
