I sort of understand and I will echo everyone else mentioning cultural differences.
I am Latina and have seen passionate interactions from older Latin couples that would make British or some American families blush a little, not even going to how some people from East Asia would react.
Watching novelas growing up, the romance is pretty INTENSE from the get go, just due to the culture. In comparison, romance in American shows are less...volatile but still relatively open with hugs and kisses.
Then I watch anime or J/K-dramas and while the context and build-up is there, the actual interaction between the couples are...minimal. All due to the culture.
I tend to err on the actual relationship itself having some issues; the romance is established, there is little issue getting the relationship to start, but there are problems that come up in the relationship itself; families may not approve, person has issues that are showing up after the relationship is out of the date or honeymoon phase, maybe race or sexuality and how that impacts dynamics are coming more in the forefront.
Granted, I also don't write about teenagers and/or school life romances. I tend to focus on either a fantasy/sci-fi type world that maybe a bit more dystopian, or I focus on adults who are out of school, even out of college. I'm thinking about writing a BDSM story with an older divorcee with some severe issues, and a rich spoiled son of a CEO who needs to grow up...but that's off topic.
It really just depends on the type of romance. A lot of romances on tapas are slow due to the cultural aspect. shrugs I enjoy them enough, but I also know it's not something I can write about well enough.
