Speechbubbles are the bane of my existence

I swear to god, everytime I look at older pages, I want to scream at my speech bubble decisions because WHAT AM I DOING SOMETIMES

Bubbling your comic is a skill in itself, and I feel myself constantly realising things I could do better. Like I draw my own speechbubbles to be imperfect on purpose but sometimes they look ridiculous. I've gone back and fixed a lot of them and still UGH

Like at some point I had long wobbly bubbles that were too close to the letters

then I started making really boxy bubbles?? LIKE THEY ALL HAVE WEIRD SHAPES

(WHY ARE THE TAILS SO SKINNY AS WELL????)

and then there was too much empty space

WHY IS THIS SUCH A PAIN. I like my bubbling now but watch me complain about it in like 2 months Luckily it's readable enough to not have complaints

Those speech bubble shapes reminds me of Der-Shing Helmer's comic: The Meek.

Have you heard of it. It's sad that it got discontinued at chapter 6. Still loved it and hope it continues.

Honestly I frequently change around how things are phrased to make it fit better in bubbles. It's a good job I don't need to work to a concrete script on Errant!

Speech bubbles are really one of those things that feels like an afterthought, like "Okay I drew the pages, that's the hard part done!" WRONG, now you need to do this graphic design element and if you don't do at least an okay job of it, it'll make your comic way less professional, even if everything else about it looks great!

If it makes you feel better, I think it's very hard to do a worse job than the official Twilight Graphic novel, or a bunch of the print versions of Webtoons webcomics.

Doesn't seem much if an issue I've seen so many popular and successful comics with fast and loose speech bubbles with large space/tight space etc. As long as it isn't insane scribbles of course!
I guess it's my own preference but I like loose bubbles drawn individually as it adds a bit of personality so that's how I do mine.
Can be a chore though!

I recently found out that I'm weird in that I do my speech bubbles first in a comic. Well, maybe not the BUBBLES themselves, but I write out the text in the panels before I get to sketching because the way the dialogue lines up pretty much visualizes the rest of the panel for me.

I think that last bubble has the perfect ratio of words to empty space.

I really like doing speech bubbles since I draw them all and don't rely on a tool. Now I not perfect when I make them but they really bring a page together.

I sort of got to a point where I just do square bubbles because I find them so much easier to work with.

Tho some of the bubble placement is a bit bizarre in my older work.

Dear lord, I've got the same dang track mind on these word bubbles, like claustrophobic bubble cases on my squeezed-in words and tails leaving my pages feeling to tight bc the words are always bigger than I plan for.

The tails turns around to knock on the wall and come back shirt and stubby or long and whispy, what are those lil things doing about? Gotta say though, the organic bubbles blend in better in my op than the perfect circle ones and I feel they look better with more organic syles.

It's just wrangling them amorphous blob heifers to suit your paneling needs haha.
