Tapas Writers Camp discussion thread

Since everyone seem to be sharing what they would be writing, I guess I should share mine too.

The (may be) Summary:
Liam and Ian have been together for the last five years, and Liam thinks that maybe it's time for him to get the shiny little thing and readying himself to kneel in front of Ian with the biggest confession in his life, but when someone from the past showed up and opening the old wounds, deep feelings, and dark past, threatening to shattering their now perfect life together, what will they do?

Stuff I need to say right now:
Yes, its a gay story.
Angst is there very often, hanging with the characters like a bff.
I'm not living in U.S., and I'm not even that good with English grammar.
Additionally, I don't know s*it about how U.S. citizens living their life or U.S. school system, but I did my research (on Google, obviously) and taking a hella tons of notes, but the accuracy is not that convincing... but I'll try my best.

Okay, I will ignore the grammar and just take a look at the concept. It seems like a really good fit for the size if story that Tapas is wanting for this event. The subject matter is gay romance, and that seems to be a popular subgenre right now, so you have that going for you. It isn't my thing, but I might be interested in seeing what an outside observer thinks of the life of gay Americans in the U.S. as based on internet research.

This is a brilliant concept. It has a nice Asimov or Rod Sterling vibe to it. Will you file this under Science Fiction or Horror because I could see it as either one.

I'm officially hyped for this. I'm doing a slice-of-life/drama novel in the style of diary entries from a 12 year old (Emma) called Jacaranda Street. It's about her getting to know her neighbour (saved Emma's life in the first chapter) and settling into high school. I've got the chapters planned out, I've just got to get writing, come up with a blurb and the thumbnail.

Probably sci fi, as I didn't intend for it to be very horrific in that sense. I just thought that it might be nice if some form of gender dysphoria gets addressed, as this site is very LGB positive, but I'm missing the T. The science fiction set up of body swapping is just a medium to convey that feeling of 'this is the wrong body'.

I warned my readers that I was entering the contest because it meant I'd be adding another book.

Expected someone to complain that I do so many but I actually received praise so that felt nice.

Keep in mind some people will compare your story to the recently premium "Body for Rent," or others of that nature.

I had this idea long before that premium, so I don't doubt it'll be vastly different. Besides, swapping bodies isn't anything new. The movie 'surrogates' and other science fiction flicks have touched that topic long long before.

I'm going to focus far more on the idea of being stuck in the 'wrong' body, than the idea of selling/renting out a body. Thus I'd say the problem proposed and the arguments made won't be the same at all.

I'm totally excited for this contest! I just wish they'd announced it a little sooner so I didn't have to start another new thing But I'm a NaNo veteran so I should be able to swing that teensy word count in time!
Although a death in the family totally changed my plan so I had to scrap a whole five episodes to avoid certain triggers... >.>

My current idea plays on angels and demons because there's just something about taking religious figures way out of context which makes me really happy. A demon meets a prostitute who is love with a fallen angel, and his interference gets them together. It also eventually gets the angel killed and leaves the prostitute with twin children who she will abuse until the demon takes them off her hands and raises them himself.
(It's a lot more complicated and planned for a long-game series so fingers crossed the Tapas folks are okay with that, lol)

I honestly don't expect much. The last contest I was in was over at Inkitt, and while I did get published, that company is a tragic mess >.> Still, I can't resist a good contest, it makes my competitive side so happy.

I hope that I don't come off as fanfirl-ish. But 1. I love your name! 2. I love the plot. Looks cool. Only thing I will ask is that make that prostitute a layered character.

Honestly, this looks more like a plot for a tele-novella than a 5000 word story. Are you going with the strategy of give em ten chapters and fill in the rest after the contest ends?

I am slowly hammering out a rough outline for my own Tapas Novel Camp project. These unexpected work shifts are really getting in the way though. I know which characters I want to use and the general tone. I mostly need to stop being indecisive and pick a conflict.
