@AfroAtelier Undertones!! I love seeing your process - thank you for posting. I'm never satisfied with my watercolors, going to grab that from you next time I try them <3. As for Stormlight, I haven't read that series (though I believe Mig is reading it now, so it's probably somewhere around the house). I used to read a lot of novels and for better or worse now it's 98% comics .

I've reference one of the Covers from the Movie Mulan, such as this and then added small/noticeable details to it like the Blossoms, since her father used that as an example at the end of the story I believe.

Actually I was gonna draw the other version of Mulan where she is wearing the armor she took from her father. You know I might draw that as well I just wanted to get down with this one first

And YES, i remember you mentioning that you do watercolour art as well! Would you be willing to share some of your watercolour sketches and paintings (or make new ones ) we'll be watercolour buddies
What genre of comics are you into at the moment? mine's always chopping and changing but at this moment of time its supernatural horror

I'm totally nerding out but I find these so fun to share because, they're kind of like a piece of animating history as well as a brilliant way to study art styles.

OMG I NEVER KNEW actually when I see those two movies side by side I actually can see the similar qualities thats so fascinating and its also intriguing to see the story boards as well

Today I'm back to work, on my way into work I picked up new Faber-castell polychromos colour pencils. I've wanted Burnt Sienna 283 for a while but then I stumbled across and colour I quickly tested and think it will come in handy, called India Red 192.

Both these colours will be brilliant for some of my characters with brown skin tones. Burnt sienna is important because that is a base colour in the watercolour mixture for characters like Nani that I draw and paint. After the paint dries i usually go over areas in pencil to smooth the transition between light and dark areas. Being able to touch up areas with the right pencil colour will help. Especially since I was using burnt orche which is lighter than burnt sienna.

@LCT_m_a_d definitely go for colour I remember your pieces "Control your inner-actions..." and "The key to a spirited mind..." which had colour, that was so eye catching and had this really nice pop to them. The shades of purple and dark reds in the clothing were certainly tantalising and I liked the use of fuchsia in the tree in "The key to a spirited mind...". The use of orange and grey scaling in "Control your inner-actions..." would definitely be something I would really like to see, especially in different colours.
And I'm curious to see how you would use browns and darker shades of colour

You experimenting and using more colours will be so interesting especially in observing how your work develops​🏾

@Chita LOOK AT ALL those curves and curls in the horns and hair! The hollow eyes really add to the eerieness of your character! Will you draw more of her?

Daaaaaaaaaaang! That’s striking! I’d love to see some colors but that is just nice as is.
And yup, that was my Gremlin “Stripe” (from memory). It started as a doodle of Artemis, but I was seeing more gremlin in the expression, so I abandoned my original doodle and went with that.

@AfroAtelier I love hearing your insights on color. Especially when it comes to brown. I can see there's a lot of natural control over how everything blends in your pieces.
I kinda feel weird about mixing pop/vibrant colors in heavy inks. I should probably do it though since I do like experimenting with them separately. Thanks for the insight.

@Kelheor Those eyes are something else and the finger pressed up against the mouth is a nice touch! I still find those interactions hard.
Thanks btw. I was trying to go back to clean digital inks and coloring them like I did last year. (When my mind was far more fragile ). You did point out that they weren't bad and last weekend I got the impression that how I was working then was much more inviting than the colored pieces I've been now. Too much between pop colors, perspective, and half-baked inking. And I struggle to see a clearly comprehensive piece.

I don't have a real favourite Disney character, since it's difficult to decide. I like villains for their sassy, wicked, genius, and pure evil nature, sidekicks for their uplifting virtues and heroes because they are...well heroic and good role models. I can't choose just one when there are so many facettes to each story and character. Not to mention the many spin offs and Pixar etc.

And I love your sketch of Nani. She's beautiful. It almost looks like a professional rough sketch for the film

My latest sketch, I'll try and redraw an entire mise-en-scene from a still. I tried a detailed study like this since my last ukiyo-e landscape study and those always took the wind out of me.

You can't see much at the moment but hopefully you can make out the expression

@LCT_m_a_d tell me about it, I made a few rules for myself to follow and one of them is that i should incorporate brown as much as I can into my art. It's not always possible but, when it is, you best believe that it'll be a focal point for me.
Each new colour is like trying on new shoes, once you've broken them in it becomes comfortable wear. Once you get more familiar with using colours, you'll end up giving yourself the freedom to choose whether you want to do a grayscale, black&white or use colour. Instead of being limited to grayscale or black&white.
BTW have you ever thought of recording your pencil art or screen recording your digital art. I bet there is a wealth of knowledge in your process that would look amazing to see from start to finish?

@Veropatra ahhh so many good characters and some of the spin off Disney TV shows are top tier! Recently, I got into watch Tangled the TV show and before I knew it, I was binge watching the series!
I really like how to plan your characters clothes, great use of layering and your art looks amazing btw, I can't wait to see more!

@AfroAtelier haha yup! We're a team - without both of us, there's no comic . I think I never posted this here, but the last watercolor I did more seriously than trying to knock out a quick sketch was a gift. I didn't love how muddy some of the colors came out - it's always hard because I came originally from oil paints and now from digital where it's much easier to fix/change until it's like I want. Genres, eh? A little bit of everything, please, though I skew consuming more fantasy/action/adventure/romance. Mig's mom just sent him maybe a dozen Sandman comic books so I guess I'll be reading those again next XD. What's your favorite supernatural horror rn?

And today's sketch, made-up clothes that could use a few more iterations. It's nice that studios get to divide the concept work and illustrations and other stuff . Just another thing to practice.

@migxmeg That watercolour painting is stunning and great choice in picture frames, it goes well with the colours. I wouldn't have even suspected muddy colours if you hadn't have mentioned it! Even still, I can't tell which colours are muddy and which aren't, but that's one of the great characteristics with watercolour, you can never quite predict how the water and pigments will react (especially once they dry and age)!
Get out of town! I just finished listening to the sand man audiobooks I know it's not 100% the same thing but what a small world. And I'm currently considering buying one of Morgan Beams latest watercolour comic: The Hilot of 1910
