character names can be fast or slow for me, it depends. usually, first names come before surnames. when i do the majority of character first designs its in a sketchbook, far away from wifi, so i jot down a first name. surnames require research - meaning, region, origin.
i think davids name is the most interesting in breakout, because it actually has specific meaning; the alias she adopts later is magen, which is hebrew for shield, the source of her powers. the magen david is another name for the star of david, so its a pun i spose. idk what the surname ai means bc i couldnt find it, but its phonetically similar to a word that means 'love' which is ironic since shes aromantic.
i chose the name anselm for a different character a long time ago, because i thought it meant 'protector' - turns out its means 'protected' which is very different, but thats why its anselms name, its what xe aspires to be, a protector, a hero.
maria's name had purpose, in that she was raised to believe she was an angle (wings, innit) so shes 'maria' as in mother mary, and dias-santos because santos as in saint, and dias because double barreled brazilian names.
