The new layout is harder to navigate and has less contrast then the old layout. It also just feels kind of drab and boring.

Navigation

  1. By removing the page system in viewing the library of comics and novels what has effectively happened is that it has become impossible to reasonably find lesser known comics to read, and making it hard for users to find new reading material if they've seen the more popular comics and novels already. This isn't just bad and irritating for people using the site: It also means smaller comics will start to struggle to attract new readers.

  2. The new comics page is harder and less enjoyable to navigate with the different tile sizes and chaotic layout.

  3. The main page has gone too far bombarding us with too many (relatively small) images of comics. It tries to go too far, becoming extremely overwhelming in the process, and as such inaccessible to new users and people who just want to browse and see some good comics.

Contrast and Usability

  1. The new palette regularly uses very thing grey lines so close to white in it that when taking a look at the page at large you don't notice them, making it look as if text is cluttered in random places instead of having buttons and an ordered system like we used too, making the site harder to navigate and use.

  2. Worse: The new palette choices with soft grey and white colors is terrible for people who don't have 20/20 full color eyesight: Especially people who need slightly higher contrast (which is a pretty large chunk of the population.) - I don't have vision problems but even I am struggling at some points.

  3. The extra comic viewing page where you can see all episodes when clicking on a comic actually functions a lot worse then what used to be there before. I get it: This is the format webtoons uses; it works for them, but they still direct you too the actual new pages when you click on your notifications, making it less annoying. But still ultimately:

  4. Tapas was unique in it's scroll through system where you could easily and without effort read a comic, which has been taken out with this new design. This was one of the main appeals of Tapas over other similar sites. Nearly all comics I follow also appear on other sides too. Many of which have easier navigation comparably within the comics area.

  5. Can I just point out tapas has started putting images under the ads that degrade and belittle people who use ad-blockers? What the heck Tapas, you don't get people to turn off an ad-blocker by degrading and Belitteling them. - You annoy them off your website.

Drab and boring

  1. The new color scheme for the website which is mostly greys and whites, instead of white, dark grey and yellow, with less of the joyful website branding feels like a boring and drab stock website design, rather then something designed for a good user experience: Something the old design gave: It put a smile on your face while using it and using it was comfortable. - We didn't need a greyscale website that looks like any stock website put out there. - Especially not when this actually made usability worse.

Overall conclusion:
It's drab, it's harder to use, it's overwhelming, it's bad for smaller comics and novels, it removes one of the core features that made Tapas appealing and it's terrible for people with poor vision.

I know it's unreasonable to ask but please, return to what we had: It was good, looked fresh and most important of all: it was functional. And now I didn't even mention all the glitches like any text in Italics in Novels just not appearing.

"We'll get used to it" but it'll never be good without severe adjustments, that we can be sure of.

Comics are best read on a larger screen, rather than a phone. That said:

User interface changes should not result in a degraded navigation experience. Auto hiding of frames, requiring an additional click when accessing a favorite, the removal of the next unread item in the user library at the bottom of the page, the need to click on "Next" rather than simply scrolling to the next unread episode and the removal of the number of unread comics in the library icon are all object examples.

The major advantage for readers that Tapas had over other platforms was excellent navigation. The current changes have relegated Tapas to an "also-ran".

I was just about to ask what they changed as I'm pretty new on the platform before realizing the uncanny similarity it suddenly had with webtoons. Like just why would you want to look like your competitor??? It had more creator friendly customization, now it's just gone?

I find the new look really hard to navigate and harsh on my eyes with everything in white and the bars jumping up and down. And the Comics page having different size pictures makes it very difficult to find anything.

I haven't found anything to show what I have read already, continue doesn't actually take you to the next page but to the one you saw last.

And the fact there was no warning or news of this chance happening would indicate that Tapas doesn't care about the users.

This whole thing just looks and feels like a cheap and poorly made Webtoon copy.

Ahh, I see Tapas is going for the Webtoon white palette, the Webtoon front page layout and the Webtoon comic page layout, very unique indeed...

Hate to see the endless scroll gone on desktop for bingeing series, same with the permanent sidebar for looking through episodes (you can bring it up by scrolling to the bottom and toggling it, but it requires more work) and same with 'extra button/link' on all pages (helping to direct to my patreon, as well as comic banners on each page, also helping to direct to my patreon.

It's one thing to put Tapas exclusive comics as number one priority on a site (we get it, you need to make money), but to minimise design to a point where there are less places for everyone else to promote their patreons, kofis, gumroads, etc? That hurts.

There have been some upcoming in the pipeline around the forum.
And some have giving suggestions on how to improve the site as we knew it.
But that doesn't matter when you total redesign.

And you are all right.

IT IS A SCROLL HELL.

I have just changed my ”yes” to a ”no”

Endless scroll is made solely for mobile(unless it's like Tumblr where your dashboard has large posts and you can still see blogs by page), which doesn't explain AT ALL why push it into Desktop other than laziness and conforming to trends. Notebooks and desktops haven't disappeared entirely yet, I have no idea why they couldn't just replace the front page organization with the new one and keep it as is. Hhhhhhhh

What about Endless scroll, when it will load new page only after scrolling at end and scrolling more over end of page? This one thing is cca OK in webtoon app, and it would be OK on desktop too (yes, it's applicable). But how it was, it was not best before, it was buggy, and it was heavy on resources, but now, now it's less buggy (page is not jumping) for example, but that controll from user is like, I need to do 3 milion clicks, scroll 2 kilometers on mouse wheel, and then, we will show you what you want to see.

Before around 30 mins ago I didn't even know there was a forum. Suddenly everything chanced when I opened a new page and I found the forum while trying to find the newsfeed to see if it would tell me what happened.
So this is fun

Just woke up to this, and I'm like "NO"

I liked whenever I clicked on a webcomic- you would be instantly transported to the latest page- not drab boring boxes like Webtoon's setup. My banner at the top that I spent HOURS trying to make is now GONE- replaced by one of my avator icons for a particular chapter...the whole new setup is so DRAB and BORING AF.

WHY do you HATE us Tapas?!?

Open Library > Right Click > Open in New tab, wash, rinse, repeat. Welcome to Webtapastoons. Horse whip the designers, tar and feather them and ride them out on a rail to a waiting ship where they're keel hauled and their tattered remains are drawn and quartered before being fed to the dogs...

Wow they just copy pasta webtoons- so fucking creative. Son, I am major disappoint.

I'm honestly surprised how many don't like the new layout because I absolutely LOVE IT.

It's clean, I'm not forced into a random episode when I click on a comic/book, but can choose from the list... What's not to love?

Also never been to Webtoons, so no idea how these two designs look compared to each other. I just know I prefer this clean look to the clunky old one any day. :+1:🏻

Frontpage. NO MENU when you scroll.
Episodes: NO CUSTOM BANNER. NO SIDE MENU. POPUP NAVIGATION.

What I like about it: They have a lot of comics/novels at the top on the front page so that more people have a chance in the sun. I also like that they moved the staff-picks to the top of the front page rather than the bottom; gives unknowns a better chance to shine. I previously couldn't even see the collection Rags to Riches on desktop which was kind of a big deal since my story is apart of it. XD I'm glad I can see it now.

What I don't like about it: It seems like the staff-picks for novels have either been removed entirely or combined with comic staff-picks which sucks. I doubt a novel will make it on there very often if they decided to combine the two sections and it will make it that much harder for talented writers to get noticed. I'm not particularly fond of how they got rid of banners, either, and the front page layout is a little bit messy.

There's some good ideas there, they just need to be cleaned up, I think.
