That's one way that "foreign" words get integrated into common English use (as well as into other languages, too). A large number of Yiddish terms are accepted English words & mostly, I think, due to the influence of immigrants. Other languages, too, I'm sure, but Yiddish is just the one I thought of at this moment.

It was just a photo I needed to quickly find for an example I was doing.
So it may not be accurately right, but if you get the idea on what I am implying than ok.

And yeah not everyone agrees with everything, like for this case the olives, people have different views than what I view it as but it was for how they call people with a certain skin tone which was "olive skin'
and I used the picture as a comparison to that skin .

I live near DC and you have to use time instead of miles because you might have to deal with public transportation. 20 miles can range from 30 minutes to an hour (or even more in some cases).

I've wondered about the origin of the term but never delved into it until this thread. Now, I see that even the internet isn't very helpful at explaining where the term came from, but will shovel at you thousands of websites expaning what the color is & not all of them in agreement. LOL <3

my understanding (and I'm sure it's different all over) was that the olive in terms to fair skin tone refers to green undertones in the skin. So like if you're buying makeup you can get the pink undertone foundation or the olive undertone one. They're both the same paleness basically, just olive tone implies you don't have that ruddy peachiness.

I guess in makeup they call it a neutral undertone? but if I were painting it I'd be using greens.

Wikipedia says this: Olive skin is a human skin color spectrum. It is often associated with pigmentation in the Type III to Type IV and Type V ranges of the Fitzpatrick scale. It generally refers to light or moderate brown, brownish, or tan skin, and it is often described as having yellow, green, or golden undertones.

An interesting fact about olives -- they do not naturally turn black but must be soaked in lye.

Don't forget that in British English, you can also be moving at a fair clip! (moving quickly, whether walking or on a boat or other vehicle).

And in general English you can watch a clip of a movie!

I find it interesting that we put on our shoes and socks (no wonder my socks wear out so fast) and we describe thunder and lightning even though lightning comes first.
