F*ck it; new strategy: take the funkiest stuff you've seen going on on Twitter and start topics about those things...! >:T
It's a while since I've covered any borderline offensive subject matter...ah, those were the days~. But more to the point: this is something that genuinely confuses me, and it's bothering me that I can't reason through it on my own. I...don't see the value in telling people that they are the 'wrong' ethnicity to participate in a cute art challenge...??
For context, this is actually more about excluding white artists than POC. ^^; I understand the importance of being allowed to tell our own stories without having people who don't live that same experience take the message for themselves and trivialize/dilute it...but I don't understand how that applies to drawing Princess Peach as a black girl, for instance. =/
If a white artist were to do it (who the hell would be checking on that, anyway) exactly who or what is being harmed...? It doesn't "steal" exposure from artists of color...as nice as it would be to be able to give marginalized creators more views by simply keeping mainstream ones out, that's not really how social media works. And I don't see how it would be offensive, if they're just literally drawing what everyone else is drawing.
Most people I've seen in defense of the position have said things along the lines of 'just let POC have something for themselves, just this once', and I can see where that makes sense, but again...how does that reasoning apply to this?? What is the inherent value in deciding that only certain people can draw certain things, especially something as relatively unimportant as an art meme? WHAT IS THE GAIN?
