I think Tapas ending is a good thing. It got a lot of people thinking about data preservation in a way that we've never seen before. However there's always a downside to this. The downside is that there will always be a chance that digital media will not be preserved like it use to be. Sometimes data will be lost and sometimes people will have to fight back. If they don't or won't then whose fault is it really? Companies always tend mess over the people who buy from them anyway so why fight.

I acknowledge that I am privileged enough to not have to worry about my comic getting lost in this devastating moment in time. And I could imagine all of the stress everyone is going through, especially with how a lot of people relied on posting their work online to preserve it. It's unfortunate that the data servers that holds work of hard-working people will most likely be sold or be transferred into data sets to train their stupid AI. They want to replace us, but we have to fight back and show them that we can still stand.

Webtoon should be scared.

My thoughts exactly. I think Webtoon should be scared. If Tapas could shut down, think about Webtoons. Disney owns about a 3% stake in Webtoons Naver side by the way. That's why I stopped posting my story there.

I think us indies that work on the community comics will get off relatively lightly from the shutdown. Yes rebuilding your audience elsewhere sucks but at least there are no legal issues to worry about uploading elsewhere. The originals creators are in a more turbulent situation because currently there's no way of knowing how kakao will handle these works if the rights transfer to them, there's a chance they may be lost forever. I think creators will have to think twice before signing any kind of originals contract if another platform offers one. Make sure to read the text clearly and account for ways to get your IP back!!

I feel bad for the people who passed away from illnesses or something else that worked on the webcomics. I wonder what will happen to their work. Will it be lost to time?

I really feel you on that, as I thought of recently passed @joannekwan when we got the news about Tapas getting closed. And I really hope there are physical copies of her work, at least I know there are Kindle copies, so her relatives and friends can print the books.

But then... everything will be lost in time eventually. One way or another, sooner or later. There were different social media exodus lots of time before that, people are losing their accounts on different platforms all the time and losing their creation works in every different ways, even the physical ones. So the best we can do is to look forward, not back.

The solution i found is - yes its good to upload your work online for ppl to see, which is nice, but my comics are gonna be printed physically like manga volumes for my shelf. Nobody can take that from me. I might even have some available for sale but idk about that. I dont even care about getting money out of it. Ill put my stuff up on the next webcomic site and repeat.

That's not, I think, a reason to call Tapas closing down a good thing. Something good can happen as a result of the closure, I agree, but the closure remains a sad thing. A house burning down may teach a useful lesson about adequate insurance, but the fire is still a tragedy.

Saying it is a good thing knowing there are creators who rely on this as their income is insensitive. I rely on my books. I had many plans and projects. I dont know what will happen to my exclusive books. I fought back to the point where I was featured in 2 articles this week from my tweets. Creators who passed away will have their work gone.

Tapas closing down, the downfall of digital art through GenAI has
led me to go back to

1) traditional art
2) traditional publishing

My comic will colored traditionally and I will publish it as a book.
I always wanted to that but I´m more certain now that it´s the
right way to go. I will also go on a tour through german comic
books and do life drawings there when the book comes out.
It will be successful and I don´t depend on the internet and
I´m doing something that other people don´t do.

I honestly do not know for myself if it’s a good thing tapas is shutting down it suck’s and it’s sad cause I just joined last month and didn’t expect it to just leave like that but I think we can appreciate all the moments we had here more than anything and who knows if it’ll shut down and that’s a big hope but regardless I enjoyed talking to everybody on here

The Korean originals will be fine... The western premium originals will probably have their rights reverted to the creators or sold off to some other company, because it's just a waste of money to abandon them. But the free stuff that's exclusive to Tapas? That's what's in danger.

I think the bigger lesson is to not rely on the permanence of any one publishing platform, even Webtoon isn't forever. Building and maintaining your own site will always be the best way to ensure your comic is never lost.

It's unfortunate that tapas won't stay purely as an archive.
